various reasons, running costs with the big 30,000 pump, fluke treatment problems, condensation in winter, die off due to drying out if you lose filtration for a day or more, and fancied going back to basics.
plus it is still as noisy as hell even inside a filter house

Yep, suppose its one less pump to worry about? It will be interesting to see if your parameters differ at all next season?

i had undetectable levels of ammonia and nitrite with the shower.
i'll see how 200 odd litres of K1 compares....

I changed from a roto concepts gravity shower in spring to 2 barrels currently holding 200l of K+ which I will gradually up to 300l.

I scraped in spring and found flukes then had white spot pop up just after, so treated initially with PP then SV for the flukes followed by a good couple of water changes before switching to FMG.

Since then I have had literally no flashing or flicking all summer for the first time ever and this was after removing the filter for the moving beds that I treated for the issues. Was the shower holding things causing the flashing all the time? I think so but no way of telling 100%, I just know I treated the same as I always have.

With the 200l I am now at 17.9 getting a trace reading of nitrite after feeding 300g per day so thats just 1 summer of maturing time. I would like to think by the end of next season with another 100l of K+ going in I'll be able to feed closer to 500g. At 20 I was getting no nitrite whilst feeding 300g daily last week so pretty happy with that for now, I did feed more on the shower filter but I also had it running for a few years so a more mature system and that was 200l of crystal bio.

The fish seem happy and as mentioned no flicking or flashing. The only things I have seen was the odd little mark when the nitrite got high and as soon as I done a water change this went away. I think mid summer I was feeding about 350g and getting nitrite up to about 0.5 so I was pushing it a bit, but once I eased off and changed some water the nitrite dropped and any little mark vanished pretty rapidly.
