Help! Big leak on pond can't find it!

I've been suspicious ever since I set up a trickle in pond float that I have been loosing water. Today I decided to go further in investigation. So I lifted off the rocks off one side and all the plants that were on it, pulled up the liner and just below the plant ledge there was loads of water 😢. I got the pond vac out and also pumped out some more water in the pond to make lifting easier. I did noticed less water on the outside of the liner as the pond was going below the ledge. It maybe a clue. What can I do next please.

Repairing liner typically means draining down, cleaning off that section completely and then using a patch or piece of new liner which is then vulcanised using solvents. If you use something like gold label sealant (note you must not use any bathroom sealant with fungicidal chemicals) or marine sealant not that it can fail over time. Also liners become brittle too in UV light.

However it is very difficult to understand what the scenario is without photos.

My pond is approx 4.7mx3m wide. Then I have a waterfall too which is another 0.6m long. It slopes from 1 foot to 3 foot. Oval shape. 10years old. I Dare not push out the folds too much as most of them are pretty much set in place. I was looking at some dye but alot of those swimming pool dyes don't say they are fish safe. 🤔 I have goldlable and patches ready. But I don't have acetone or cleaning agents.

Originally I had a two step pond liner pond, the liner itself must have been over 15 years old and someone had patched the corner of the waterfall during construction (lazy). I came back one time to find the corner had 1/2'd the water level.

That prompted me to build a new pond that was a fibreglass based pond.

Normally you’d leave the water in the pond and allow it to leak, when the water level stops dropping you can look around the water line to find the split, unless you know where the split is already? Unless you think the leak is in the waterfall in which case I’d bypass the waterfall and see if the level still drops in the pond? If it’s the waterfall I’d just replace the waterfall liner if it was me

The waterfall has been replaced by me last year with proper rubber liner with a protective top on. Maybe whilst it's top up I'll turn the waterfall off but keep the large airstone running

i just fixed my mother in law's pond with the same problem. Turns out the old waterfall tubing had the leak, which was c.25 years old and tightly inside a large stone cemented waterfall structure. bad design by the original builder

Update! Well I've left the pump waterfall off for 24 hours and the only water loss ive had looks like a smidge of evaporation. I guess and hope that's the answere. For now I'm off to buy some reducers and 2inch hosing to go direct from the filter to the pond. I have a kockney koi 15 gallon filter with 2 pipes sticking out. These are 56mm outside diameter so I guess a reducer is right?

Is there a way of putting pictures on here or do I have to use photo bucket img like I did 15 years ago?

I bought 2 kockney koi adaptors 56mm the a hose tail then 2 inch hose into the pond diverting the waterfall in the end. 30quid but it's a temporary fix for now people. 👍
