Thread: Saki Hikari, my experience so far

Probably a subject that has been discussed many times but I would like to share my feedback on this food.
So my new build is now up and running for the second summer in a row. Up till last summer was feeding a growth food from another supplier. Same number of fish (had a few losses which were backfilled).

Last summer the maximum number of feeds that I managed to reach during summer was 4 times per day with an automated feeder. Around 200g. Quite a lot of it was ending up in the easypod connected to my skimmers. No point in trying for more...And the amount of poop; oh my.

This summer I decided to try saki for a change. OK the price is well horrendous but I thought I will buy 5 kilos and see how it goes. Impressed is an understatement. Currently 6 feeds per day and there is nothing left. I keep checking the easypod and I rarely find any food in it. Significant reduction on waste too.

But most importantly; the fish are actually growing. I have 2 orfes which I have for 5 years now. They grew for about an inch in the past and I thought that well that's it. Well they took over an inch in the last 2 months. My latest addition (a chagoi) which I got late May and was about 8 inches I reckon is over 10 now...Even some of my big ones which I thought they reached maturity and max size grew during these 2 months that I have been feeding saki.

Well converted now....My bank account will suffer though

Not dissimilar to my early experience of using Saki.

Saki Balance is a brilliant all year round food.

Cost wise..... it gets painful as the Koi grow. My 14 are munching through 500 grams per day, 30 Kilos so far since ramping temps at the end of May. Plus 600 grams a week of Mussels as a Sunday treat.

It has got to the point where reducing the number of Koi might be the preferred option to reduce costs, as opposed to changing to a cheaper food.

I've been feeding a fraction of the food i fed last year,
about 100 g a day of saki balance, colour, and hikari wheatgerm.
and 20g of mealworms.
with occasional fruit like melon and orange.

Saki is now an easily affordable option. one 15kg sack of balance, 7.5kgs (half a sack) of saki colour, and 10kgs of hikari wheatgerm will last a year easy.
next year will be cheaper still as i only need to buy the balance and wheatgerm.

Bet their a lot more active as well, for me it's a very fine line between fed and over fed!. It just kill's the main part of the hobby for me, love to see them pacing up and down, like hungry Shark's.

Even on 500 grams a day, the first question I get asked by any visitor who see my koi at feeding time is:
"Wow, they are starving, are you feeding them enough?"

They go berserk for food, even if I only fed them 10 minutes ago.

Still trying to figure out where overfeeding starts. As mentioned I feed 300g per day; whenever the kids though are out in the garden they love to chuck in more food and the fish never say no

I think I have read that you can weigh them and calculate a % of the body weight but I don't really want to stress them out.
