Freddyboy had them . The slime coat is meant to be good for other fish (not sure if it could also be a mare when needing to treat ? Ie parasites hiding under the extra slime needing more pp to help remove)

Can one of the air bars not be added as DTF has ? As my understanding is no fish will clean the bottom it's just all about the movement

I've got a couple of tench in with my koi and they've been fine with all the treatments I've put in the pond.

I think they are hardier than the koi and don't seem to react adversely to any of the treatments I've thrown in so far - which has been PP, salt, acriflavine, alaprex, chloramine T, various different Kusuri fluke treatments and an overdose of lernex pro.

The only issue I found is you can't really do a scrape on them, which surprised me as they feel so slippery you'd think they'd be easier to a do a scrape on than koi. I attempted it a few times and didn't get any off and just some black pigmentation, so I've not tried since as I don't want to hurt them.

They are bottom feeders but they won't keep your pond floor clean. If anything they'll add to the waste.

As AJM said no fish will keep a pond clean., other than maybe the movement of a big fish kicking debris up into suspension or towards a bottom drain.

I've had a golden tench in my pond from the start. It's been through every single pond treatment you could imagine, at much higher than the packet doses

...well that jinxed it. The footlong tench managed to make it into my bottom drain and it was dead in the drum today! Shame. Can't even see if there's and issue with the BD lid as pond is green as UV has been off during treatments.

I've got green and golden tench in my pond and they have been no issue. Been moved about 4 times. They are a bit skittish but they will happily eat from the surface at the same temperature Koi will. They just come straight up from underneath the food, grab a pellet or 2 then shoot off. A few minutes later they come back again and do the same. I've even seen 2 or 3 of the bigger Koi fighting over food and a Tench pops up and steals it from them. As others have said they are slow growers but I think the green ones grew quicker than the golden ones. They are really quick which makes them hard to catch should you need to at any time. I did find they were quite expensive for their size compared to similar sized Ghost Koi.

That's so true about how they feed.

I didn't really expect them to feed off the surface but they do.

They are pretty stealthy. I rarely see them when they are at the surface (I only have green tench). The only way I know they have fed is I hear a small splash and I look round and the pellets that were there are gone.

My green tench just appear out of the darkness right under the food then grab and go but although the golden tench do the same they will also come up with the Koi once they feel brave enough.

In the first pond the tench wouldn't get a look in at feeding time so we tried them on sinking starlet food which worked for a while until the koi got a taste for them.
