Question my koi only eat & show up at night

    Hi all,

I inherited an old pond when moving in last year and started with kois. Long story short after heron visit and horrendous water, we did a full pond refill last month.
Pond is about 500 gallons and water quality is good:
    PH: 8
    KH: between 7 and 8
GH: 4 (water is soft here)
    No nitrate/nitrite/ammonia

We already had 3 ghost koi which somehow survived all of this but they are very skittish and stay hidden during the day. I started to put food in a feeding disk as I realised that they need food (duh!) - before I would find the pond water all stirred up every morning (they were grazing the bottom trying to find food - duh!).

Hoping to help their skittishness I introduced 3 goldfish last weekend. They are not timid and used to people.
After exploring they also have gone under and I can spot them only at night with a torch light. As they are new I hope that it is a matter of time for them to come back up and get confident but I fear that the koi's behaviour may have forced them to skittishness :-(

I can spot 1 of the ghost at night so I know one of the 3 is a bit more confident.

I spend a lot of time by the pond hoping they get used to me and have added some caves and there is plenty of plants cover.
I feed them staple floating pellets with mealworms.

Are they any tips on helping them becoming more confident? Is it a matter of time, weeks, months? Will it improve in the warmer months?

    Thanks a lot for reading.

Is yours a shallow pond? I remember trying to grow some koi on in a shallow tank and they were extremely skittish and constantly stressed.
    7500 litres
    Filtreau combi with uv.
    Some koi

How long has it been since you had a heron visit, and are you sure it’s still not coming back, they are very persistent and don’t give up easily.
It will make the fish very skittish and will hide during daylight hours. Even if the heron has given up, it will take a long time for the fish to become confident enough to show themselves

The pond is about 1 meter deep, it was built around 4 brick walls with a raised side on each side.

The heron was last seen in March but that does not exclude it came back since then however we added raised net so the entire pond is now protected for the last 4 weeks already.
