Thread: Too much sun?

    Too much sun?

My fish have been acting oddly lately, I have two grass carp and when they are stresses they ‘bleed’. By that I mean they look like salmon do when they’ve been migration to spawn.

Parameters are all good, oxygen levels are up as I’ve moved from a 60lph to 100lph air pump.

This pond is in full sun at this time of year for 95% of daylight hours. I’ve never had a pond that gets so much sun; I’m wondering if this may be causing a problem and is stressing them out. I’ve rigged up a bit of a sunshade this morning to give them some shade but wondering if anyone else has noticed if so much sun can cause problems for the fish?

I don’t think it helps because I’ve had green water for nearly a year and the last few weeks it is now clear.

One of mine gets a little bit sunburnt and scabby along the top every year. Seems to do ok though. It's his choice though, he swims out in the open, none of the others get it and they hang out under the trees

It’s worth testing your pH at various points during the day and night, as you might be getting some pH swings which really does irritate the koi. They can adapt to a wide range of pH but cannot cope with rapid swinging, which happens with algae in sun.
The pH will generally be at its lowest early in the morning before the sun has hit the pond, and at its highest when photosynthesis has been going on all day, using up the acidic CO2 in the water.

If not, then once you’ve ruled out water quality issues with ammonia, nitrite and chlorine/ chloramine, then parasites move up the list of possibilities.

For no particular reason other than my fish seem to like it as they congregate under it, I cover a quarter of the pond with a sheet when we start to get full sun and higher temps. Maybe worth trying to see if there is any improvement.

Sorry, just noticed that you have in your post.......
