Thread: Venturis

    Venturis

These were a huge thing 15-20years ago but I rarely see any mention of them these days.

They used to be a really good way of aeration and seemed to move water better around the pond. I do remember there could be issues with back pressure and to avoid them on UV returns but also that they were quite noisy on the air intake tube (I used to put a box with jap matting around mine to reduce the intake noise).

Iím considering adding one or two to improve water movement but am keen to know if there are other reasons they arenít used any more.

    Anyone still using them?

I had them on my pond for years, worked extremely well but yes, the noise could be a bit intrusive. Seem to have gone out of fashion, although still seem them used on aquarium set ups.

I use one on my pond and no probs.
Before the venturi it is T' d off to another valved return so it is controlled.
No noise as it's at the far side of the pond and returning near the water surface.

    It turnes the water nicely.

I have used them in the pond, long time since, but still use one in my QT, a little aquarium filter with venturi, just for extra circulation and aeration, the filter itself does FA but it's cheaper to run and quieter than most air pumps

i thought venturi's pretty much got replaced by either air pumps or needle wheel impellors.
venturi's create a lot of back pressure that requires more wattage in the pumps than air pumps or needle wheel impellors,
so not very efficient in watts per litre of air.
