I love this hobby but....
It can be bloody trying at times. Just finished treating for gill flukes. So dodging the rain yesterday, I was cleaning the drum and switching the U.V. back on, when I spotted my gin rin tancho lying on its side at the bottom.
Not dead but not looking too good. So a quick scrape and I find Costia
. More stress for the fish and my wallet.

Sorry to hear Gary, drives us mad at times don't it! Hope you get things sorted and the tancho pulls through.
Good luck,

If its any consolation, think I have Costia too.
I posted last Autumn about finding a couple on re-scrapes following treatment of flukes, ordered ICC from Duncan but it got stuck in post for 3-4 weeks, by the time it arrived it was too cold to treat.
As temps cooled further the Koi's skin cleared up.
They looked good coming into Spring so I thought winter might have taken its toll on the Costia, then with the ASHP now up and running I held temps a lot more stable than a typical Spring and the rising temps didn't trigger anything initially, but this last few days, now at 19.5C, I have a couple of pinked up bodies and a couple intermittently clamped up on bottom (predominently in the mornings).
Hopefully get a chance to scrape this weekend. Fortunately have 100kg of salt and 1.5 bottles of ICC in stock so I can start treatment as soon as I scrape and confirm its definitely Costia.
Despite the massive outbreak of flukes last year, so far not seeing any fluke type symptoms - but this is the reason I need to scrape first, just in case.

Thanks gents.
Hopefully this treatment will do the trick and then I can just enjoy the pond and fish.7500 litres

Pain in the arse isn't it, Gary! There don't seem to be such thing as a trouble free season! I found flukes on mine last week but now have white spot as well so Cut the fluke treatment short to treat for the white spot as tbh my fish seem to always have some flukes and get on well enough but this white spot has them clamped on the bottom or smashing off the walls and floor like mad! FMG went in on Tuesday so as per Duncans book the next lot will be Sunday then another 5 days after, let's hope it shifts them! PP, SV and FMG so far in the past 2 weeks!

Guys - out of interest, where would I find/be able to order Duncan's book/ICC?

Good luck Garry, this hobby definitely tests us at times.
Know others have had issues, but alparex has worked well for me with shifting costia. Need to be careful though if you’ve had fluke treatments in the pond recently.

I feel your (and others) pain.
I noticed my fish started lunking/gulping air and diving back down. And also bottom sitting. Then one got a big red patch/raised scales on its flank - presumably from flashing on the BD cover.
I suspected a pH crash, but before doing a water change parameters were fine
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate - 20-40 (can never tell which)
pH 8
Kh 5
I did the water change and always use healthy doses of ST, so don't think it's a chlorine issue.
I netted a few to do scrapes but could not get any mucus off them (even my mirror carp who I was relying on as a good candidate).
I managed to get the smallest of blobs (just bigger than a pin head) off one and saw trich. So whacked some PP in there last weekend.
Since then it still seems that something is affecting the fish, but as I can't get any mucus, I can't say what?
I've not seen flukes on previous scrapes for a long time now so have half ruled them out.
One thing I have noticed is there is now suddenly a lot of blanket weed/string algae floating freely in the pond? I'm not sure if that is an indicator of a problem, especially as the pond walls only have a small fuzz of blanket weed.
I'm Stumped.
I suppose I should follow naoki's advice and leave them to their own fates and ensure I feed them little and often, which will then solve all problems :-D

With blanket weed and pond wall fuzz I would suggest monitoring pH swings through the day, mine are twitchy late afternoon and the only thing I can find is pH very high at that time.
I have used B/W control to try to reduce the growth on the walls and quite a lot of hoovering to get rid off but it still grows, the Koi peck it off and feed on it and the wrigglies making clouds of it in the water. My EZpod needs cleaning at least every other day 'cos it's clogged with itLatest: Sansai Budo Goromo Yamabuki, Nisai; ShiroUtsuri OchibaShigure,Tosai; Beni Kikokryu,KinMuji

Great sympathy with everyone having parasite problems this year. Do people think it’s worse this year than previous ones?
I’ve had flukes quite regularly in the past but never anything else, until this year. Maybe the fact that winter just continued right through ‘spring’ until….well…now? The pond has barely been out of the dangerous 10 to 14 degree range for the past four/five months straight.
An ashp is looking more attractive by the day, but do people actually have fewer parasite problems in heated ponds?

Yes had this problem before too.
Columbo advise you wait 4 weeks between alparex/fluke treatments, apparently there was a case where someone had a fatality.
I’ve left it 2 weeks in between and done a 20% water change and all been fine. I’d think any activity from the fluke treatment would be greatly reduced after a couple weeks.
Good luck mate

I hope so! I’m at my wits end. I had costia that ICC shifted and nearly two whole, uninterrupted weeks before flashing started and they were crawling with flukes. Touch wood, they seem ok now but my first spring season really has taken its toll on my enthusiasm.
That said, John and Paddy came to my rescue first time and I’ll be forever in their debt for that.
What pisses me off is I’ve kept aquariums for years and have always very firmly believed that all issues can be traced back to water quality. So I monitor it religiously and never had a single parameter issue. Other than my already liquid rock hard water, no dips or spikes of anything at any point - and when there’s issues I can be testing 2 or 3 times a day. And still got ravaged by parasites. I’m hoping it’s because the fish are new.

Had I hope John! I scraped two weeks after the last ICC treatment and that little Tancho that was on deaths door had been flashing, as well as the two big (for my pond, not big by koi standards
) and I just picked the fish that was easiest to catch for a scrape and the slide was crawling with flukes.
Fluke Solve Plus has them all looking a lot better.
