My lad helped me today, bowled another fish, did scrapes and couldn't find anything, then he had a idea, took a bit of K1 micro from the filter and tapped it on a slide, found these from there.

So far I can't find anything on the web quite like these

This kind of microscopic play has nothing to do with KOI keeping.
Of course, natural ponds and lakes also contain a myriad of micro-organisms and parasites.
So we are in the habit of constantly monitoring the behaviour of the KOI itself and any changes to its body surface, and taking counter-measures.

Less than one per cent of us are microscope users.
Most of us have never touched a water quality test kit.

So I think the prevalence of these two actually seems to be the source of a lot of the problems over there.

Because we rarely hear people over there talking about the annual planning and proper execution of the full feeding season, or the emphasis on KOI swimming and behaviour to improve it, which is our top priority on a daily basis.

So even there, before relying on those two tools, you have to look at the KOI itself, as we have been trained to do since we were beginners, and reflect that in our fine-tuning.

I’m sorry but I don’t agree with you, the fact he found this on his filter media i think is very relevant, and he was only asking a question to make sure it wasn’t anything to worry about.
The fact that we use microscopes and test kits in the uk is different to what you do, it doesn’t mean it’s wrong it’s just a different approach to what you’re used to.
I do find some of your comments condescending and to the point of insulting at times.

Naoki, when someone finds what they suspect may me a Koi life threatening parasite, your postulating re the Japanese way of doing things is of no help at all.

It's funny because you only have to watch a few of the koi videos in Japan and you'll see ponds at breeders with fish in that are being treated with PP etc. All these claims about not needing microscopes and treatments yet koi always arrive to dealers riddled with parasites, ask any dealer and they will confirm.
Of course having good water quality is the key to a healthy pond but when your water supply is as poor as it is in the UK it will always be an uphill battle. I agree to the point that healthy koi will carry parasites and be fine so not need treating, but the reality is there is far to many issues out of our control that cause upset in the water biology and allow the parasites to dive in when the fish have a vulnerable period dealing with whatever the upset is.

I have just changed the bio on my filter and now have whitespot as well as finding flukes on a scrape. Unfortunately I have already treated with supaverm on Thursday as the white spot seems to be causing a lot more stress than the flukes but have done a big water change yesterday of about 25% and will do a smaller one today then probably treat with FMG today or tomorrow.

Following Naoki's advice I would just do nothing and let the fish continue to bash themselves till they split open and then get a lovely bacterial infection and die. Sounds like a great plan, sound advice that!

Thank you H, I've been watching many videos and the Rotifer class was as close as I could see, but haven't found the two tailed variety yet!

    Cheers, John

Hasn't been the case for me as has certainly got worse since the treatment but FMG in now and hopefully will do the job.

Parasite City or guess what's living in my pond ;-)

On the theme of weird things found on a scrape. Check this out!

I treated for flukes with Lernex pro a couple weeks ago, but notice some flashing in last couple days. Scraped a couple fish and found 1 fluke, but also this creature. Considerably larger, had 6 legs and long fine hairs. Found another one dead, and the live one werenít very happy.

    Any ideas? Short video

Cheers John, useful video Parasite City or guess what's living in my pond ;-)

Spoke to a couple koi dealers. They didnít think it looked like a fish parasite, possibly just part of the normal aquatic life you might find in a pond.

Not sure what it was doing on a scrape mind Parasite City or guess what's living in my pond ;-) going to treat for flukes again and rescrape next week.
