    Amalgam UV in Bio riser

I知 going to upgrade to an amalgam UV as I知 fed up of having green water. I know a lot of people put them in the drum but given this can cause issues with drum seals I知 wondering if it could be put in the riser in the bio (not in with the media). I currently have an Draco MIDI bio- is Draco kit stable for UV? Anyone done this?

I did mine in a DIY loop off the drum with an old pump. It works well and doesn't need to be on every day at the moment (I'll run it for a week then leave it off and the water seemed fine). I also left it off over the winter, with the bulb removed and everything drained down

What wattage bulb are you after - the one in the photo is a 80W bulb.

Should work fine, as Nick's has. As long as there is a decent flow of water around the bulb, I can't see why it won't work.

The only thing I'd say to be mindful of is how much of the base of the bulb will sit above the water line, if installing in a vertical pipe. You don't want too much being above the waterline as I imagine this can lead to overheating or shorter lifespan for the bulb.

As an alternative, if you have any 90ー elbow joints on your pipework that is horizontal, you could swap the elbow out for a swept T, put a stop end into the bit that T's off, then cut a hole in the stop end, and fit the Amalgam fitting into the stop end.

This works really well, as the quartz sleeve would be completely immersed but you can still slide the Amalgam bulb if needs be without touching the pipe work.

I initially did this on my pond, but had to change tactics as the swept T was so close to a fence I couldn't slide the Amalgam out if the bulb needed changing Amalgam UV in Bio riser

Yup - I have to prime it by evacuating all the air as the water is pumped up from the base. Horizontal seemed a good option too and I could alter the orientation at a later date.
