    "False" koi?

When I've seen koi for sale in bigbox retailers (in the US), I've noticed that some koi look different than real koi. Their mouth is more lateral than down-facing, and they have a bit of a "chin"; they also have no barbels, or very small ones. They tend to be one color, mostly grayish-white or washed-out yellow. However, they don't look like goldfish; they have the flat belly like koi, and the general dimensions/proportions of koi. Basically they look like dull koi with a weird mouth.

I vaguely recall reading somewhere (a number of years ago) that some bigbox retailers are selling "false" koi like these, and I recall that they were either a related species of carp or a hybrid, but not a hybrid with goldfish. However, I can't remember what the other species might be, and I can't re-find any info about it on the web.

Does anyone have any info about this, or know what species it might be? Thanks.

A picture is worth a thousand words and would help to identify the species

Its been 4 hours and Frimley hasn't shown up so I'll cover for him.

Dealerships normally identify the koi in the vats with lettering, i.e A, B, C, D, E etc.

It is the D Koi that will be the false one.
