    K+ or Hel-X 13 for moving bed?

    I can get the K+ for £90 per 50 litres vs £45 per 25 litres for the Hel-X 13
has anyone any experience of using either. and any problems/advantages in fluidising?

looking for media for my new bio chamber and i will add the 75litres of mature K1 micro in a mesh bag, when i swap over.
as after a few weeks i'll slowly remove it as it's a pain to fluidise and squeezxed through the smallest gaps...

i'd just get the old K1 but it's not easily available since the new media,
plus the new media has a higher protected m2 area than the previous version...even higher than K1 micro and Hel-x 13...

I converted an old loft tank into a moving bed. It has 75L of Hel-x13 in it and it has had no problems fluidising.

I went with Hel-x 13 because it is bigger in size and was cheaper than K1+ when I was looking. I thought it would be less likely to escape and would be easier to clear up if it did.

The other advantage of Hel-x 13 is that I could use this in the moving bed https://www.japankoiimports.com/prod...10mm-x-1000mm/

I think it's the same gridded pipe that Oase use in their moving beds. It slots into 110mm tank connectors and can also be used with 110mm rubber connectors.

Correct me if I'm reading this wrong but you wrote - I can get the K+ for £90 per 50 litres vs £45 per 25 litres for the Hel-X 13

Isn't that basically the same price litre for litre?

I’ve got 150l of k+ to go in my DIY moving beds as figured it would offer me enough bio and space to add another 150l if needed (290l barrels). Not sure if it makes a difference or not, but I just thought with K+ could you get away with a smaller air pump as a smaller media to move compared to hel-x? Probably makes no difference but was a thought I just had

I saw one of Wrighty's? videos when he built the Up Filter and used a bag of K+ he'd cleaned it a few times and was still removing plastic swarf from it. Could have been just a bad bag or batch? The stuff in my Tempest looked OK fortunately

    thanks lads,
still undecided between the hel-x and K+

but yeah, i saw a video of northern koi keeper and all the swarf he found in his bag of K+...not good...
might be worth an email to EA first.... can't be arsed picking all that out of 200 litres of media!

that could seriously faff up your pump if gravity fed!

though being two years ago hopefully they have sorted any issues out by now....

I would be amazed if they haven't sorted it out by now but for the record I have 100L of Hel-x 13 in total (25L is in use on the grow on tank) and have never seen anything like the swarf in those videos.

I went for the K+ when I started up my bio this summer - Very good experience, it starts rolling very quickly and also seemed to colonise very quickly. Did find a little swarf but not excessive. I paid £65 for 50l which was the cheapest I could find. I actually think a mix of the K+ and helix would complement each other and work very well.

    I'm about 80% set on the K+...
I can't get away from the feeling of the hel-x 13 looking like the plastic women's hair curlers they used to use for bio media in the 1980's
So much for computer design lol

I think what ever you use they all do the same thing its just the cost of buying it that hurts . K1 in my nexus and K3 in the two moving beds and all is good 10 years on .

gone with the K+ in the end... 200 litres in 4 x 50litre bags for £274.

i've been pretty happy with the K1 micro i've had, and thought i'd stick with a brand i know...
but i'll remove the K1 micro once the K+ has matured, as it is a bit small for fluidising and has a habit of ending up where it shouldn't be...

i might add another 50 to 100 litres of K+ once the K1 micro has been removed.
but i'll see how i go...

i've still not decided to keep the shower or get rid completely....
as i'm thinking about mounting it on top of the bio chamber and feeding from the shower - to the bio - to the pond....
