Thread: water Lilly growing problem? how to suspend a basket?

I have been trying for some years to have water lilies in the pond, I have had a few issues, firstly the koi like to up root them out of the basket so I now place stones in the basket to stop them digging.

the other problem is the depth? the baskets are around 1.2m to the bottom of the pond and seem to struggle to get leaves up to the top? the pond is also covered with clear laminate pagoda so possibly not getting the light that they need?

I was thinking of suspending the pots to around 2 foot deep in the water but can't think how to do it? I could use rope from the pagoda above? but this could swing about in the wind?

or I could put something below them to lift them up? but what? it would need to be sturdy so not to topple over and would need space under neath for the koi to swim/hide? I suppose there are materials that will give off chemicals which should not be in the pond, so would it have to be plastic?

I was thinking of planting in a floating pot? but I assume the shoots want to clim in water to the surface, I could be wrong and might be worth a try?

So your floating pot you put a line through the bottom to a weight this holds the floating pot submerged but still buoyant. You set the length of line to suit your required depth.

Have a search for window flower boxes or similar.

I have seen some that looked really good for this purpose, but the quality ones that would work with my specific pond were expensive.

Alternatively there's loads of cheap options like this one that could work with some modifications to extend the depth:

That looks pretty good.

I might get one with the sole reason to stop fledglings drowning in the pond as it should help them get out the water, as long as it doesn't attract more birds to use it as a platform for getting a drink!

if and whenever my garden gets dug up and all replaced with new pond plan is too put a couple in just to break up the corners as it will be oblong. think a bit of fishing line tied to basket over the wall to a weight should keep them in place. something tall at the back iris ? and watercress at the front which should cover the front of basket and hang down.
Hot news Surveyors have just turned up to measure gardens only got 41 properties to do mine is just back garden but 50% are are front and back gardens. full topographical survey that cant be cheap.

I think I am going to put 4 hooks in the roof above the centre of the pond and use galvanised jack chain down to a few inches above the water then change to something else as I assume the metal in the pond could rust and cause problems? so possibly something plastic string or chain? and then suspend the basket about 2 foot into the water.

I’d love some lilies but there’s no shelf to place them on - anyone any ideas ? I read somewhere that you can suspend the baskets but worry about my koi or sturgeon catching themselves on it …

My koi are difficult enough to catch now - might have to look into this a bit more !!
