    Damn weather

Just when i thought the weather had turned for the best we now have cold temps due again next week! poor fish, desperate to get the temps up from a long cold winter...... luckily its not been severe but now seems a long time since the covers were off, i want to give the pond its springtime PP treatment and deep clean the pond, filter, drum, equipment, add new cartrides to the dechlorinator etc... oh and treat the rust patch and repaint the render......
Pond temp been fluctuating between 12c and 13c for a few weeks now,(i prefer 14/15c for PP treatment) fish are looking ok there are a few small blobs of pox showing on some tail fins but once temps go up this will go but most looking healthy, eating once or twice a day, perameters are all good so at the moment things are ok, no new fish going in this year like last year, i have enough now taking into consideration future growth etc, i want to get some growth and good condition into the fish this year, looking forward to chilling next to them with a cold one...... not long now guys

I was hoping to get some spring work done in the garden too, but it's too miserable outside atm...

even though the weather is colder today at 9C - 10C,
i'm still taking the covers off in the morning and putting them back on at night.
the koi 'pond season' is short enough as it is, without extending it well into spring

the pond got up to 14C recently, but is back to 12.5C now with the covers off in the day....

    Pipework arrived today.

But can't finalise the plumbing till covers are off the pond.
The shower base lifts the shower 32mm above the edge of the pond, thus allowing for winter covers to be placed underneath the shower weir, which they currently are, but need covers off to work out exact positioning of the shower so that water goes fully into the pond and not all over the coping stones.

Will also need to put timber on the pond coping underneath the shower weir to prevent strong winds blowing it over into the pond as the shower is a little front heavy.

Going by your temps you'd probably be warmer than mine if you still had covers on. My pond doesn't hold heat very well and expect without covers it would be around 7.5-8C

Pain in the arse isn't it, I have been trying to finish a few things in the garden all spring and it just seems to rain every day that it isn't under 5 degrees! I have ACL reconstruction surgery Monday so that means I will be less than able for probably a good few months to do the basics in the garden which is why I wanted to get as much tied up as possible but won't get everything I initially had planned done thats for sure.

    Hi Steve,
Window and top covers still on mate.... will take them off once ambient is a steady 14c + looking forward to seeing your new shower in place, have to say my 3 tier shower has made a world of difference to parameters and clarity and no doubt has improved aeration with the weir return....

    Hi John,
would be good to take off covers for sure, yes ponds position helps with temp as its surrounded by the house on two sides and the fence on the other, its only the window facing out into the garden and thats covered.... i spent time on getting every pipe lagged, all equipment is housed in too so that really helps with temp, i have the heat pump set to 12c so it comes on when temp hits 11c but its not been on for a few weeks now, next week looking colder with NE / E winds blowing, single digits all week and much colder at night, i take the window cover off here and there to give them some daylight.....atb Steve

    Morning Steve,
Must be nice to have the ashp what size/type have you?
Since taking covers off on 17March temps have been going up well as now at 10.5 and koi doing well.
I have heard they will drop a bit next week been keeping a daily diary of my temps so I can refare back which is handy.
    John

no have left them on for now, massive heat loss when removed, I can tell by the number of times that the ASHP kicks in, maybe 2 or 3 weeks time, see what the weather does I suppose.

    Question for all,
I will be raising the temp from 12 c to eventually 24 c, at what rate per day in degrees c would you advise increasing, I can raise in 0.5c increments if needed, I will start to increase and leave the covers on short term, my ASHP is 9.5kw (thermotec inverter ) 3500 gallons, all walls fully insulated,
    what's your views pls ?
    Steve.
