Thread: Bead filter to polish water

Hi,

I have a pond it is about 8500 gallons, with two bottom drains and two skimmers all these feed into a large combi drum filter. I have 3 returns to the pond all through the drum, one goes to the moving bed, one to a bakki shower and one is just returned to the pond.

The water quality is good but I want it to be crystal clear and it’s not quite there. I plan to use a large bead filter filled with k1 media to really polish the water. My question is which return should I use it on, I could put it before the bakki shower , after the moving bed or on the return with no filter although I may add a ASHP to this return.

what are people’s thoughts?

Do you have a skimmer line?

I'm in process of installing a bead on skimmer line which will then feed a shower. In my situation that seems the best option to add a little polish to the water, but your set up may differ.

If you are only after polishing filter Advantage used to sell a "Glass filter" it was basically a sand filter with a ground glass media. This was plumbed in after your main bead filter, then back to pond.

The only thing you had to do was PP the whole thing every few weeks so no bio film glued it all together.

I was tempted but decided too much faff

Not sure if money is an option (given the cost of electricity now) but bead and sand filters need powerful pumps to run them effectively. The type of filters needed are expensive to run in comparison to a ‘regular’ gravity system alone.
