    Spring clean day

Spent all day on the filters.
Fitted a drain tap on the drum so its easy to drain and clean.
Then got the hose pipe in there and gave it a good flush out.
Removed the drain bay and it wasnt too bad, expecting it to be full of crap.

Made some new pipe which was shut down over winter but the water froze and cracked the joint.
So all good now covers off and temp gone up 3 deg in a few days and the mob are eating very well.

I’m away for Easter so when I’m back going to do my filter cleans well swop my shower from a 600 to a 1000 then the grow on tank has now been relegated to becoming a big k1 moving bed so I can over filter for some hard feeding in the sumer

So this is your bio so I wouldn't clean that.

If you think you need to then a good old rattle in pond water then drain off so I would think.

If you want to clean after buying second hand then pp is your best bet mate.

Some agree and some will disagree but after a good ol spring clean and you have really disturbed any and every thing I personally would hit it with a double shot of vikron

Agree there entirely Johnathan, I have allready dosed double shots of Virkon aquatic and they are looking ok with it.

What I was implying to Whitey is a general clean as I wouldn't touch it,but as you say the Virkon is the bees knees.

Not an expert in this field but I would be giving all of it a good soak in pp for min 24 hrs high dosage.

You dont want anyone else's parasites in your pond, maybe someone else can give you the dose, but I would be going very strong.

Pp bath dosage for fish is 1gram per 10 litres for 7 minutes. For sterilising equipment the sky's the limit really. You could double that, but anything over is gonna work fine but realistically is a waste of money / Pp I would think.

Chuck your nets etc in at the same time, might as well give them a freshen up and give it a good 20mins. Job done.
Leaving the bhm overnight wouldn't do it any harm if you have the space and can be sure the kids/pets/mrs arent gonna bump into it.

...I had a bit of an enforced spring clean the other day. The mechanical side of the filter was backing up and overflowing and half the IBC pond had drained out because of it. I had to break it all down to figure out k1 from the moving bed had forced it's way up past the pond shop guard I had put on it (bits had broken off) and was preventing the mechanical side draining into the moving bed quick enough. Small blessing though as the shite I sprayed out of the flocor at the bottom of the filter was well over due.

Fixed it with random stuff I had to hand and the filter clean and big water change just before the weather started to warm up, was miserable but has probably done the pond a world of good for starting off this season.
