    pond mesh cover materials

hey folks... last year I put my polycarbonate cover on my pond every single night without fail (or left it on in the day if I wasn't around). To be fair it isn't a massive pond but I'm wanting to build a semi permanent mesh cover this year instead.

I'm looking for some rigid sheets of black, powder coated metal grid like material. Has anyone got any recommendations and specific experience?

I'm planning on screwing hooks into the inner edge of my coping, and using these to suspend the grids an inch or two above the water surface. I'm looking for something that is pretty rigid in pieces of approx 1.5x1.2m ... ideally not crazy heavy.

Have a search for rs2000 pond build mate he had some on hinges and pad locks and in winter lay the covers on them for the support

Pond looks lovely What's your main reason for the grid cover, keeping unwanted visitors out? Personally I would leave more space than 1 or 2" between water and cover and tbh hooks on the inside of the coping sounds a bit dangerous for the fish.

as kiogon has said you want more than a 2" gap or the fish will be nutting themselves off it.
my gap is only about 5" or so during winter with poly sheets on top of a ring of guttering downpipe...

in summer i use a soft netting removable cover as you need the oxygen levels...

cheers. Yes it's to keep out predators mainly, but also to keep the koi in. My goshiki jumped out last summer, luckily when I was in the back garden! I may well attempt something along the lines of the conduit version you have in the vid there Dave. Less expensive than metal too I imagine.

    it's not an ideal solution,
but i don't think there is one...unless you have some kind of thunderbirds type thing that is hooked up with winches

i couldn't sleep at night with no covers or netting on the pond...
some people have open ponds and are lucky and will never see a heron... others have only been lucky so far....

i had a 6ft deep 3000 gallon koi pond in the 90's at my old house for nearly 10 years, first time i saw a heron was after nearly 9 years
you don't realise just how big the damned things are until you are running full pelt down the garden and come face to face with one.... they are literally nearly as tall as us!

yeah I live near Frodsham marshes and there's loads of the buggers down there. I do see them fly over once in a while so I'm sure they spot the pond sooner or later. I've also lost sleep in the past as a hedgehog was running around... I was worried it would fall in and not be able to climb out. Then there's cats... crows... magpies... squirrels.... and don't get me started on pigeons!

I’ve had to build a permanent mesh cage over mine after having the pleasure of being near enough wiped out by otters last year,I’ve used a wooden frame around edge of pond with two centre supports and hinges for the mesh sections
,it’s obviously not great to look at but haven’t really any other choice!
    I used weld mesh with 50mm squares,frame is about 3.5m x 3.5m about 6 8x4 sheets

cheers Dan - have you got a link to the weldmesh? I'm leaning towards soft netting now but interested to see....
