Pond clays
Did any one start grinding cat litter for the pond clay .
Running low and it maybe mind over matter or snake oil but I like using it .
Tried a 3 different ones all completely different characteristics once in the water . The fastest to clear by far was the queni stuff but that dose come with the price tag to match

I've thought about doing the cat litter thing but went for the easy option in the end, big bucket of NT Labs Medi Clay.
7500 litres
Filtreau combi with uv.
Some koi

I've been using it on a weekly basis for the past two years. I put about 2/3rds of the recommended dose in once a week. I usually add it in the afternoon and by the next morning clarity is all good again. I can't say for sure if the pond is better for it but I do plan to continue with it.

I also grind up the fullers earth cat litter and add that to my grow on tank. It's definitely a much cheaper way of doing it than paying £40 odd quid for a tub of similar stuff from a koi shop.
I only use a cheap electric coffee/spice grinder and that works well.
You might get the odd tiny lump left in it, but it largely grounds it down to a fine dust and clouds the water up well.

This is some thing am working at at the moment. The queni stuff clears in 5 hours ish . Gmac has just said the nt clears over night. I mainly do mine later afternoon so it's done and clear again by morning. Guess it depends on filters ect . But dose help with fines aswell

I've never used a pond clay,
always tried to take stuff out of the water with RO rather than add stuff to it.
but i suppose the clay will remove contaminants from the water, similar to how RO water lowers them.
either way i'd have to turn off recycle RO or risk blocking the membrane with tiny particles of clay....

Clay is ment to help remove heavy metals aswell I believe so like me any one not running not understanding the ro world its the next best thing . Still lots that believe its snake oil . And as always there is lots of people that have had a pond for 50 years and never done a filter clean let alone ro or clay lol haha

i use pettex due to on the packaging stating pure fullers earth so no additives to bulk it out. also i believe fullers is a another name for bentonite.
