The UK's Top Koi Keepers Secrets?
Considering everyman and his dog has a youtube koi channel...
and happily share all their trials and tribulations.
there seems to be a severe lack of any content by the guys who regularly win at UK koi shows, and are arguably the top UK koi keepers..
at most they might let someone video a few of thier stunning 90cm+ fish,
but there is a distinct lack of detail of how they actually achieve these stunning results.
I'm not talking about every single aspect of what they do to prepare koi for shows,
but some of the basics of how they keep koi... quarantine, health, temperature, food ect..
but you can occasionally glean a few things...
like a video in January 2020 where the Jenkins pond is still at 18C....
and having pure welsh mountain spring water coming out of the tap might be a bonus
or a post on FB recently that he is currently at 24C and still increasing the amount of food, and will keep it at 24C until the end of December...

...and that is the trouble with YouTube. You only really need to follow a couple koi YouTubers, cos they all just echo each other endlessly.
I stick with Wrighty as he does lots of DIY builds, quality Nishikigoi and the Koi partner (despite his new American friend proporting to be an expert whilst not understanding gravity fed whatsoever). Everything else is incredibly repetitive after a while.
Oh and Lee Hadfield pond builds, I like him, seems genuine and a very capable chap. I couldn't spend what he does though. Vomit inducing the gear he gets through, and then starting again immediately.
However, Koi wholesale / Koi talk discusses the exact type of thing you mention, but mainly focussed on growth / condition.

I think Koi Wholesale videos are great and also doing a great job at getting sales because they are selling the fish before the dealer either gets them with the content they offer. The emphasis on social media is crucial I think and these days gets the sales more than anything.

i like that there are loads of people vlogging on youtube, nearly everyone has at least a couple of videos that are helpful or just entertaining.
i probably have hundreds in my subscribed list too, so i can see when they make a new video.
but i don't like a lot of the blogging videos to be honest, where they are just chatting and do the same every week.
much prefer when they are doing something or showing how they do something with thier pond.
and i follow the koi talk and koi wholesale channels,
they have challenged quite a few preconceptions about koi keeping.
and have interesting topics, plus i really enjoy the Q&A's they do...
They do focus on the commercial side of things a bit too much for my taste, but that is obviously thier passion.
though i don't think that always translates so well into a hobbiests pond setting...Last edited by davethefish1; 19-11-2022 at 06:17 PM.
