Polycarb covers
Loving the weather at the moment and set for 2 weeks ish of 24-28o but the winter questions are creeping in .
Polycarb covers are mental prices at the moment!! .
Is 10mm a complete waste of time or is it still a dam site better than nothing ?
35mm =£398
25mm =£285
16mm =£230
10mm =£150
I'll not be heating as such but will have a back up heater 3kw to keep it safe for the fish if we have a proper nasty winter . Pond walls are insulated bottom is just sand and underlay
Yes in a ideal world I would have 35mm but that ain't happening like not now and definitely not with the price hikes due again twice this winter alone

I have 10mm covers for my pond if you are not heating the main thing you are trying to do is keep the wind off the water so 10mm will do the job if you are heating then 35mm is the way to go

10mm will help a lot compared to nothing, even a 1mm sheet of polythene would keep the air above the water warmer.
Its just thicker is obviously better....
Glad i got mine 3 years ago the whole pond in 35mm for £150Last edited by davethefish1; 08-08-2022 at 10:18 AM.

Search on eBay, when I looked previously (but didn't install any) there were loads of companies trying to dump off ripped out installations, obviously would be a hodge podge bodge up, but if you're just looking to cover & not too fussed for aesthetics, then who cares.
I nearly bought one that had a double glazed window in it! Thought that'd be perfect to be able to open slightly when temps started rising
Here's one from coventry

Got a load free couple year back 35mm but was like a bloody jigsaw make shift frames foil tape over the gaps it worked to some degree but was a pain to check on fish which in turn led to fish losses in my case .
I want whole sheets and have a pully system in mind for the warm day cold night in autum and spring times

Where are you based again?
But as shown on other post, Coventry has 4x brand new 3m sheets at £15 each or others here.

Aj, I have used the corrugated plastic sheets from Wickes and as Pug said it is only to keep wind chill off.
They work fine and are UV ok.
Screwed down to a frame they dont move.John

Don’t know if you have thought trying to source second hand ones ? I was lucky enough to get 35mm from a conservatory I was taking down at work and got them for nothing but I know a lot of people sell them on if taking down a conservatory or putting a solid roof on.

The main reason for going for the thicker sheets for pond covers is to have more self- supporting strength. If I was using a strong support frame I would probably have only gone for the 16mm as would be cheaper, easier to work with and store, and really not all that much extra heat loss to be gained by going thicker.
My 35mm 6 years ago was not all that expensive. Maybe I should, take more care of their security since they are now so valuable2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Hi Mate,
I was wanting to improve my insulation/cover last year with thicker 25mm or 35mm but like you was gobsmacked at the price.
Anyway ended up doubling up my 16mm stuff from the previous years covers. So in essence I've now 32mm with a 20mm air space in between separated with a 20mm box frame & sealed all the way round with with 100mm waterproof tape.
Seemed to work great last year, so was even thinking of adding another 3x10mm sheets again this year and some sort of plastic capping to cover or replace the tape
