Thread: Copper Fountain

    Copper Fountain

My daughter has built for her art project this year a copper lily shaped fountain with a steel stem.
She now really wants to see it in the koi pond and as a proud Dad I'd like to show it off, but I'm of course reluctant because of the potential for copper toxicity.

Are there any clear sealant products which could seal/cure the sculpture but are also entirely non toxic to the fish? Or any other solutions to the problem welcome of course?

...most people's water supply is copper pipe.
...but apparently pass through is better than it sitting in water?

I have no idea of anything that would cover copper long term to make it fish safe.

    Don't

it's not a potential, it is toxic.
if you had a problem with it leaching even if you attempted to seal it.

My advice is simple - don't fit this on your pond for the reasons in my article on the link Dave just posted.

Since your daughter will want to see this is action, you could make a small water feature in a half barrel or similar suitable container. I Googled images for "water features in a half barrel" and saw a range of ideas that could feature the lily fed by a water feature pump. Maybe you could put it right next to the pond or even standing on the coping as long as there wouldn't be splashing or wind blown spray into the pond but the lily isn't suitable for a continuous flow in the pond itself.

I would also say it’s a definite no-no with fish. A stand alone water feature would be the best option by far.

You would think the school would be more careful really, letting her make something intended for use in a pond out of a toxic metal is not a good life lesson in researching and using suitable materials is it

I am interested in making a floating pond fountain, using a solar panel and dc pumps. I am making this to irate my pond.
