Koi warehouse food reviews
Watched this on youtube last night rickie was saying hown good saki was and went onto show you how other foods priced up against it kilo for kilo was interesting some actually worked out dearer but to me it was one sided he done this on the 2kg bag and then doing the equivalent
In my opinion he should have done this with the bulk bags that's were the real difference lies that's what most koi keepers buy because we all know little bags are normally double the price per kilo

Havnt seen that one,to me s/h is probably the best and I used to use it years ago,but I cant justify the price.

Yeah , saw that one Whitey . I agree , some of the comparisons were not exactly like for like - particularly with the smaller sizes .
However , the main point that I took from it was that if you look at the price of something like I`m using now - Nishikoi growth in the 10kg size (£90) and compare that with the price of a 15kg sack of Saki Hikari , kilo for kilo its not that much difference . I`m definitely considering giving it a go - and just hope its as good as everyone says it isColin

I'm currently feeding coppens osw and that works out £70 for 15kg
Saki hikari balance equivalent of osw £180 for 15kg so that's double the cost
Up to now I'm on my 3rd bag this year so it's cost me up to now £210 this year hikari would have cost me 540 so saved £330 up to now if I feed another 2 bags this year of osw I will save a total of £550 this year in my mind I will use the saving and of set it against my winter heating bills for the pond
I'm not against hikari in any way nor will I ever say I won't use it is would actually like to use it for a season to see results for myself and I'm watching daves thread closely to see his results
At this stage in my koi keeping hobby and the standard of fish I have it don't have any show winners but I am investing in a dainichi showa so I might upgrade my food if I keep upgrading my stock

top koi is ok for upto nisai,
older than that the protein level is just too high imo...
but could be cut with other feeds to balance it out...
the OSW (same as japan mix) is fine,
but i did not have great growth or colouration when i was feeding it, and lots of waste (poo).
until you feed 100% saki you don't believe what low/no fish waste is...
but like everything else it's horses for courses...
if you have a big pond with 30 x 60cm+ fish no way could i afford to feed saki....
even at 1% body weight you'd be looking at feeding 1kg a day or about 180kgs over 6 months or about £2000 on saki
i'd be feeding sheep nuts, or coppens fishing pellets at £25/15kg sack lol

Hippo as ajm said osw no staining of water find it OK
Dave have you noticed much growth on the s/h even with your fish being older Also are you feeding the same amount or do you reduce the feed amount and still get same results and also fish waste I have heard it reduces with s/h is it that noticeable

I like good growth, but having a mix of fish i'm only feeding 1/3rd growth as it would not be best for the older fish at 100%.
But even so I've noticed much faster growth in my nisai especially compared to my older fish when they were nisai.
Im feeding more but only because i have more fish.
I still feed the same amount per fish weight roughly, about 30 feeds a day in small amounts that are eaten in less than a minute.
I took the no waste thing with a big pinch of salt...
What goes in must come out?
But i was amazed at how little crap there is accumulating anywhere!
Plus the drum wash frequency has dropped a lot.
It doesn't happen over night as the gut flora has to change,
But the saki probiotics make a much higher utilisation of food so waste reduces as a by product.Last edited by davethefish1; 22-07-2022 at 08:09 PM.

I can't see any waste on the bottom of my pond at the moment when I look and am feeding only SH now. I am sure there probably is some, but not anything obvious I can see.
That's interesting you are feeding 30 times a day Dave, I though my 10 30g feeds a day was a lot!! But I totally get what your doing and why. I found feeding more regularly than every 2 hours gave my fish diarrhoea but this is feeding in larger amounts.
I have got some pretty good growth with mine so far, but it's hard to know exactly how much being that I had 4 similarly sized tosai. They all have much more body and have definitely grown in length, but as the two nisai I collected in spring are also growing, it's hard to know exactly how much. I would like to think 3 out of the 4 tosai that were 27-28cm are now around 35cm, but it is impossible to tell looking at them.I have a Shiro that was 25cm which I think must be near 30cm now or maybe bigger, but it genuinely just don't know and won't until Autumn when it gets cold and I measure them up!

30 feeds a day sounds a lot, but the feeds are tiny.
but they only get it when they are having it,
And i drop feeds off when they are not.
My reasoning is fish in the wild aren't fed 6 squares a day.
They graze nearly all through day when you observe them. Just feels more natural and they are always left still hungry.

Yeah it makes perfect sense, especially as fish don't have stomachs so don't store food anywhere. I need to get some mealworms and other treats as now I have the auto feeder set up, my job of feeding them has been reassigned! Don't want them to forget about their dad!!

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
