    Help with Hanna test results

Hi, I have just bought a Hanna nitrite hand tester the results show a reading of 56 I multiply this by 3.29 that gives me 184.24 how do I check to see is this reading ok.

    Thanks

the hanna checkers are great for low readings,
but i'd always have a full set of dropper tests as well,

i once tested my ammonia with the hanna checker the day after adding FMG... and nearly had a heart attack with an ammonia reading too high to register and off the scale!...
checked it against the API ammonia test which showed 0.00ppm...

turned out the aldehyde in formalin gives a false reading with some types of ammonia test

Just had a look at the hanna site.
If you have the LR low range nitrite checker.
It reads in ppb so 184ppb is 0.18ppm not an unrealistic figure.
The first reading above zero on an api dropper kit is 0.25ppm which is 250ppb..
So 184ppb is not ideal and should be zero or below 0.15ppm, but it's not as horrific as it sounds....

For info - the Hanna nitrite checker test method just measures N content, a conversion factor (3.29) is required to also include the O2 giving a result for NO2. Your value on the checker is 56 ppb and as you say this gives an NO2 content of 184 ppb. To convert this to ppm or mg/l simply divide by 1000 to give 0.184.

The "safe" level is generally quoted as 0.1 mg/l for soft water and 0.2 mg/l for hard water. However, prolonged exposure at low levels is detrimental to koi health. Your result is on the high side.

I agree that the simple dropper test is generally all that is needed and the aim should be to keep NO2 at zero.
