they are somewhat uv stable for use outside where the orange drainage pipe isn't.
but obvioulsy a uv light will be much stronger...so it will oxidise
but i think it would take a while to make it brittle... i think years.....

My thinking was worse case it fail in a year and its only 10er for the new t that it'll be sat in . Know its not ideal but as I need a new uv am thinking why pay 100 for a used uv that will need plumbing in more restrictions when I can get a submersible new from Burtons 40w for 140 or a 80w for not much more at all . . Not almagram but still

The pipe should last a few years. And as you say it's relatively cheap to replace.

I created a UV guard out of 1.5" waste pipe (cut in half length ways, with a little collar left to go round the amalgam housing) to avoid the seal in my drum being directly exposed to the UV from my amalgam.

It's been going about 2 years and the pipe is still perfectly fine. Although admittedly I don't really need to run my UV that much as the shade from my pergola roof seems to do a good job on its own in preventing algae and blanket weed blooms.

Cheers for the help Lads greatly appreciated . That's the plan then do away with the odd uv units and see what funds are like to if 150 for a 40w or 200 for a 40 almagram

Silly question time what is the difference between normal uv and almagram

now why didn't you write a post about that before my drum seal got oxidised and needed replacing!...
...luckily i had a similar idea to you and used a cut down and profiled UV reflector inside the quartz amalgam sleeve

Ha ha. I think I did post about it, quite a while ago.

Although your solution looks better, at least your one can bounce some of the UV back out rather than it just getting absorbed into the plastic pipe (if UV works like that).

testing it out at the moment....
i want to see how long it takes ther UV to oxidise the reflector from shiney to dull...
though the reflector was about 5 and i'll get 3 or 4 cut out of it...

much higher output at lower temperature, more useable uv wavelength, much longer life, much more expensive

50 quid difference in buying a burtons unit

Then 20 quid more to replace bulb

    40w standard 150 bulb 40
    40w amalgam 200 bulb 60

That's burtons tho but a lump cheaper than qk not sure if there is much difference in how they work/last
