Thread: Holding tank koi capacity

I am new to the world of koi having inherited a large pond when moving house a few years ago.

I have now used 3 'specialists' at significant costs but still have a pond that looks like it is full of pea soup...very frustrating and stressful. Having made the decision that the only way to sort the problem is to learn myself I have started preparing to empty the pond. I have a 850 gallon holding tank now set up with a Oase Aqua EazyPod filter system. However, I have approximately 40 Koi of about 24 inch length. Once I drain the main pond I must ensure everything is good with the holding tank. I need some advice as i am concerned the holding tank is not a sufficient size for the number of fish. Please can anyone advise? I believe I may need another tank of a similar size but would appreciate any advice please.

Also can anyone recommend a retailer or pond expert anywhere near me in Great Dunmow, Essex?

What's your existing setup & cleaning methods?

Green water/Algae, I'm assuming would be one of/all of lack of UV, direct sun & nitrates/phosphates.

I'd recommend contacting your local koi club, I'm sure there will be one, and I'm sure they will have members who would help you.
It may not actually be necessary to remove the fish and drain the pond?

How many litres does the main pond hold?

An easy pod would be way too small to filter an outdoor pond big enough to hold 40 koi.

What size and model UV(s) are you running and how much flow are you putting through them?

If you base an approximate measurement of 10w of UV for each 1000 gallons of pond volume that should give a rough idea as to whether your UVs are big enough, and halve it to 10w of UV per 500 gallons if pond is in full sun and that would be plenty.

As for 40 koi in 800 gallons.... It is doable, but will keep you on your toes monitoring water quality. You would probably want 200 litres of mature media to be on safe side and drop feeding to minimal, i.e one small feed per day to keep them ticking over and daily water changes.

The big problem with this idea is if any koi are carrying parasites it could get out of control rapidly.

Also KH will need to be monitored constantly.

Like others have said, not a good idea unless you have the experience and knowledge to manage that many koi in that volume - dealers do it, but they are in the shop all day every day watching.
