yes floaty poo is a sign of over feeding,
temperature is the biggest factor in how much they can fully assimilate, before passing it through the gut only partially digested.
I've thought the same about the saki 'germ' effect...
bacteria are very temperature dependant so when you get into the mid 20's they will work much better than high teens...
i noticed the same last year going from 23C to 25C made a huge difference in feeding how much they can eat without it just passing through the gut... far more than you would think for just 2 degrees C
i've noticed mine feed much more from hand, than the auto feeder so far, though that might change over time.
but mostly toward the back half of the day.
my fish are not morning people

Water temperature is of course an important factor, but even more so is the training of the behaviour during feeding that goes with it, which was once and still is not mentioned by anyone there.
Well, if you neglect that part in a breeder's mud pond, there are very few results.

First of all, I would like you to imitate the feeding scenes and overall movements of KOI during the peak of the feeding period by referring to the videos of people in Japan who have emphasised this point in their own ponds and have done well.

Used to feed mostly Hisilk 21 and JPD shori/shogun, but after listening to the Koitalk podcasts, switched back to Saki Hikari. strangely, here in Indonesia SH is cheaper than JPD. well less expensive anyway. cheaper's probably a wrong term for them.
btw i just read up on this thread. Dave, the sinking SH is 20kg but the bag is actually the same size as the 15kg floating ones. The sinking pellet is just heavier. i've always wondered why they sold sinking food in 20kg packing and floating in 15kg until i realized it's actually the same quantity just different weight. Hi Silk meantime sell floating and sinking both in 5 kg size, but the 5kg sinking bag is actually smaller than the 5kg floating bag.

yes, i know of someone who went from feeding floating saki growth to sinking growth using an automatic feeder,
and wondered why he was having problems, until he realised he had accidentally massively increased an already high feeding rate
as the weight of food was a lot higher for the same volume by the auto feeder...
cost is subjective, saki is expensive in 5kg or smaller bags,
but kilo for kilo is not much different in price to koi foods that are made in the EU and should cost a lot less due to importation and shipping...but don't...
thier way around pricing is to sell 10kg sacks for less than a 15kg sack of saki.
some JPD foods were made in the EU by coppens at one time...
but the legal tracability information that is part of the EU legislation and printed on the packets, is now missing as we are no longer subject to EU regulations....
where as Saki has one of the three Japanese manufacturing plants that the food was made in, printed on each bag of food.
i don't see that information on JPD or any other koi foods so who knows where it is made?Last edited by davethefish1; 02-06-2023 at 11:00 PM.
