Following Sam's lead, I bought a bag of spirulina from Holland & Barrett.

Getting it to stick to the pellets was the hardest bit.

My approach was to put a small amount of orange juice in a bowl - just enough to make the pellets damp. Then sprinkle some spirulina over them, give it a good stir and then leave the pellets for an hour or two to absorb the oj. I find the spirulina sticks to the pellets really well, even when you throw them in the pond.

Whether it'll make any difference? I'm not sure.

I've been doing it a couple of weeks now and not seen any changes. Going by what Sam says, it wont.

Perhaps a light dusting is not enough spirulina compared to the quantities that could be added if it was contained within the pellet?

Anyone thought of feeding chopped up crab sticks in peak growing season? They are 80p for 200g, so only £4 a kilo. It's made from human grade white fish/seafood protein. Seems much cheaper than SH. Although probably creates much more waste?

I have fed them crab sticks as a treat too although my mirror comes up and bullies the other fish out the way for them! I just fed my first bit of SH mixed with some Aquasource. I hand fed my mirror 2 18mm air dried boilies to keep her busy for a couple of minutes so the koi could get the good stuff Only thing is, her aggressive feeding stimulates the others to go wild, without her slurping about they are a bit more cagey, although they also spook when she starts slurping half the time so there's not really a way around it!

Astaxanthin is the focus ingredient for those interested in colour enhancing. latest foods contain them in an easily absorbed form, and some people even divert rainbow trout feed.
Well, Spirulina, which has been proven for more than 40 years, is probably the first one to go.
As I said before, it seems that all kinds of raw materials are easily available on eBay there. In Japan, it used to be very difficult to get the raw powder, so I used to crush the tablets and sprinkle them on it.
It is advisable to feed when the water temperature is above 20°C. (Some products have been developed that can be fed at lower water temperatures, but I have stated the old basic principles.)

i've been feeding saki hikari for nearly two weeks now, and though it's way too early to say what influence it's had on growth.

i have noticed a massive decrease in accumulated waste.
even though i've upped feeding to level much higher than i have before due to the large increase in fish.
currently feeding a 50/50 mix of growth and balance at 300g day at 21C.

i always used to get a patch of waste collect just to the right of the bottom drain before the fish wafted it around and it went down the drain.
that just isn't there any more, and i've noticed the drum cleaning frequency has dropped by half.
so i'm pretty chuffed with how well it's working out

Food is discussed alot, with so many different views, I think with SH though its just the real deal, the results Ricky is getting at Koi wholesale say it all, equivalent to the Japenese mud ponds in some cases, its top food. Shame the price is just so crazy with the European koi tax. 300 grams a day lol, I think mine get that per week

Its probably more to do with trade agreements and import costs and duty, Japan is in a different trading bloc to us....

I very nearly went with aquasource but figured a may as well give saki a go, because it will probably be twice as expensive next year....
Probably 45kg this year.....90kg next year?

Having followed this thread, I've decided to give AquaSource a go this year. I can't bring myself to spend all that money on SH, and AquaSource seems to be a good compromise.

Although I might splash out on a few kgs of the colour boost at some point just to see if it really has much of an effect.

Annoyingly I don't have any recent pictures of the side where I think the new Sumi has come through but I am pretty sure on one cheek where it had submerged, it has come back through. Could just be the effects of a couple of nights on the cider tho!

Aquasource is a good choice, nearly went that way myself,
But its not massively cheaper than saki, only about 20% cheaper per kg...

Its the 15kg and 20kg sacks that put a lot of people off, and the smaller bags cost a fortune....

Kentaro saki said that would be the one improvement he'd like to see in food, a sumi enhancer.
But i suppose good quality food certainly doesn't hurt

So do I! I am certain there has been more Sumi come back through though in a few places which is good. Maybe it's something to do with the fluke treatments and the fish might actually be clean for once!
