    Feeding & flashing

Has anyone noticed a difference in post feed flashing depending on what is fed?

After feeding Saki multi season for most of last year, I decided to try some Koyoshi Autumn Spring Mix.

(Partly due to local dealer not having received his Saki order and also the 2022 price for a 15kg bag of Saki

Anyway having noticed some increased flashing lately. (Water parameters all good apart from a slight increase in the pH. )

I decided to have some scrapes carried out by local friend/dealer to be on the safe side, which I'm glad to say were all clear.

He asked what I was feeding and so I showed him the Koyoshi which he thought looked very much like a mix Coppens wheatgerm & growth?

He did say another possible the reason for the flashing could actually be down to a change in diet, as some types of food seem harder for the koi to digest ?

Just wondering if anyone else noticed any extra flashing or differences after a change in main diet?

    Hi Ruffers,

mine always seem to flash around 20 mins after eating, currently feeding some sinking and floating pellets a mix of Aquasource and Burtons health food, definately food related especially in the evening when the sun gets on the water seems to make it worse than the morning when no sun on the water, the sun has an effect on the pond for sure, yet to work out what it is though......

Yes mine tend to flash after feeding. Especially after I've fed them meal worms.

    Phew!
That a relief, thought I was missing something or had a problem.
Like you say it does seem to be more noticeable when the suns on the pond?
Not bigging up Sakki Multi or anything because its extortionate what they are charging for it now, but the flashing didn't seem anywhere near as noticeable when I was feeding it last year and definitely less waste ?

just opened my first 15kg bag of saki hikari today
when changing over to different food previously,
i have had to cut it with the current food and it took a while to get them to eat it.
the saki balance was all gone in seconds....

i'll admit saki balance is a bit more expensive than koyoshi per kg koyoshi all season (both have a similar protein level)
    £97 for 15kg = 6.46/kg koyoshi
    saki hikari £150 for 15kg = £10/kg

comparing other foods i've fed in the past if you crunch them up dry and feel how sharp the bits are, is a good indicator for how they might irritate the tender gill filaments.
particularly kenko colour food has particularly sharp/rough particles, and use to cause increase flashing after feeding.

thats one of the reasons i'm trying saki hikari, i don't know of any other koi food maunfacturer in europe other than coppens,
JPD use them for some of there pellets,
as must EA.... because they use 'bio mos' in their food.
a trademark registered pro biotic of alltec coppens who developed it for use it in thier animal feeds for cattle, poultry, pigs, and sheep.
    https://www.alltech.com/bio-mos

another potential cause could be gill flukes ime.
if you don't do at least 3 gill scrapes from inside each gill opening, top, bottom, and middle.
as i have found gill flukes before on scrapes, but never from the body, only ever from inside the gill operculum.

I was feeding the Saki Multi-Season last year and through winter after recommendation.
The fish loved it and although multi season they still piled size on last year and looked really healthy, skin wise etc.
Plus there seemed to be very little waste (that could be seen in the pond) or oil slick when feeding.
But at £234.95 for 15kg its bloody expensive especially if you've a lot of fish ?
It didnt take long to wade through a 15kg bag and I've only 8 fish

I'll have a word with my pal about the gill flukes though and get them checked just in case? Thanks

the balance and growth should do my 'summer season' may to end of september. (still got to get a sack of saki colour but reckon i only need half a bag.)
my winter season food october to april i'm probably going to get a 15kg bag of saki multi season, and a 10kg bag of hikari sinking wheat germ for the colder months.
though i could probably split a bag of each as half that amount would see me through the winter season, i only used about 6kgs of food from last october to end of april.
i'm estimating about 10kgs all in this winter season coming, as i feed a minimal amount from december to march...

I have got through about a kilo and a half with my pond but unheated and was around 7-8 degrees most of winter, but noticing how quick it's going now I'm feedings again! I have noticed mine do occasionally flash more so after food, certain fish that is anyway, but I am also aware I have flukes so could be related to this as my fish are crunching the food and blowing chunks out the gills and spitting it too.

Hi Samp yes spitting is characteristic of flukes / sensitive gills from treatments....
