Are all clays created equal?
I'm getting towards the end of my 5k tub of NT Labs clay and before ordering another, was wondering if any of the forum members have used the Kuro Clay?
It's a fair bit cheaper, which is attractive at the moment for a number of reasons but I've not found any reviews.

A lot of people recommend the breeders secret but I haven't used it myself. There is a thread about fullers earth cat litter and a coffee grinder doing a good job. Cheap coffee grinder off amazon or eBay for a tenner and 5k of fullers earth is about £2 I believe, apparently its the same stuff!

I’ve used nt labs clay but seem to prefer kursuri or breeders secret.
the Kursuri seem more clay like and clouds the water longer than nt labs and the breeders secret.
The breeders secret is what I’m using at the moment (bought it from Gaz on here)
I also prefer this from the NT lab but can’t say why as you can’t see any difference in parameters etc so difficult to base it on.
I also soften food with clay and propolis to help koi that are not 100%

I'm not absolutely sure. My water clarity is extremely good but I did get a drum filter installed early last year, so that has probably had the biggest impact. It is claimed to improve fish appetite and that would seem to hold up, as the day after adding clay, the koi really seem to be up for a feed (more so in the warmer months).
There doesn't seem to be any downside, other than the water being cloudy for maybe twenty four hours and of course more expenditure
I'm going to continue using clay, just need to decide whether to stick with the NT labs or try the cheaper Kuro brand. I might initially purchase just a small pack of the Kuro and try to a comparison.7500 litres

I think it helps the colours to pop more but this may be due to the increased clarity. I was using it religiously last year though every week and the Sumi developed well on my Showa, although once the temps increased it actually lost most of it. I only really stopped as I ran out but will look to add it again soon although the coffee grinder and fullers earth way sounds better to me. If it clumps up fines and gets them caught in the drum then it can only help keep the water cleaner right?

Hi Sam,
are the clays currently on the mkt made from fullers earth then ? reading up on the properties there is Aluminium and magnesium silicate in the main, i do not know enough about these to add to my pond but interested to know more details.....clay does appear popular in the koi world however if its for clumping up fines aren't our drums and showers not taking care of that ?2200 gallons, infinity window,
