Whats all the fuss with Kohaku?

As a relative newbie to the hobby only having previously kept koi as a child i'd like to know why Kohaku in particular are held in such high regard?

I personally find Kujaku and Mastuba koi far more appealing to the eye but it seems a consistent theme across youtube and Koi publications that Kohaku are the "go to" pattern.

I think it's all about the purist...
More interested in skin quality, body shape, and size.
These things are better in the simple colours and oldest lines.

I like them just fine as well, but much prefer a nice showa or kujaku...

Was never a fan till I kept seeing absolute monsters 80+ with 3 or 4 steps and started to like them more . . By no means my favourite fish but can easily admire them

Don't like the 2 step tho just nothing about them in my eyes

As said above everyone to their own,but I agree as my favourite is the Kujaku as if you get a good one their pattern is outstanding.

I have a few Kujaku now nisai growing on in my pond and one in particular I think will be awsome.

Second is Sanke not too heavily marked.

For me i just really love the pinecone pattern, looks like a little suit of armour and the really deep red Aka Matsuba with almost symmetrical scales look stunning! I think my pond is going to be entirely red and yellow colours XD

I'm the same as Johnathan (AJM) once I saw the jumbo Kohaku I was stunned and changed my opinion. I had no interest in Showa/Kohaku and Sanke when I first started looking at koi. I found a nice Goshiki with floating beni was the one for me, and liked Asagi as well. Now I am all about Showa although I often find varieties I have never been interested in suddenly take my fancy when I see them in the flesh. This is the beauty of this hobby, everyone can have their own opinions and favourites and not one person can be wrong!

I am a Kohaku fan. They really stand out in the pond and look fantastic through the pond window even from quite a distance away.
I wouldn’t have a pond with only Kohaku, but I like to have at least 4 of them in my pond. I buy what I personally like to see, as I’m sure we all do.

It's as said for me itssize ,it's depth of red, it's snowing white skin it's just simple 2 codours I like them I do prefer a showa but not much but I'm not a lover of sanke then you can't forget shiro again snow white and ink black

That's the beauty of koi it's all about your own personal choice you have to pick fish you like then you will have your own personal moving living art gallery that when even none koi people see will appreciate or be taken back by at least one fish in your pond be it colour shape or size just my opinion

Realistically speaking, KOHAKU has the largest number of breeders in terms of production volume, quality and attention to detail.
In addition, it has the longest history.

If there is a KUJAKU that is better than KOHAKU, people will not hesitate to support it.
Unfortunately, it is still a work in progress, especially in terms of its maximum size, which rarely exceeds 80 cm and is still in its prime.

For example, to use the AJKS Grand Champion as an example, KOHAKU has always been a consistent overall winner.

All Japan koishow history 1969 to 2011

SHOWA was the Grand Champion once in 1970 and did not win it again until 1991. At that time, SHOWA was known as a weak breed and had many deformities and did not grow well. But when DAINICHI SHOWA's main lineage has established and is now often seen as the It is not uncommon for SHOWA to win the top prize.

Grand Champion All Japan Koi Show !! 2006 to 2018

On the contrary, SANKE is currently in a period of disadvantage. The reason is that in 2001, at the 34th show, the first SANKE over 1 metre, with Common Carp blood, became Grand Champion, and since then it has not been Grand Champion for over 20 years. The reason for this is a story for another time.

Grand Champion All Japan Koi Show !! 2018-
    2021

I think the main reason for this is that KOHAKU has always been at the top of its game, changing its appearance and nature as times have changed.

Best skin quality, best growers (apart from single colours) best to look at visually, red and white, what's not to like? I have 6 in main pond and grow on and will be getting more!
