    temp loss

Ashp reached 18c at 1pm today, its now at 17.4c so .6 of a degree heat loss in 7 hours, very mild still at 12c, will see how this deteriorates as the temps start drop end of next week, when it was last cold with ambient at 5c it was losing a degree in 12 hours so not much different to todays loss.

Insulated the new pipework today which was re routed externally used armaflex 48mm x 19mm you can see from the picture where the old pipe was, this was to allow a good pond turnover rate via the BD but all water from the return was not put through the biological just the mechanical which irritated me hence the chop and change...

what insulation do the pond walls have, especially above ground level?

i'm not seeing any loss with todays temps up to 13C,
    just the opposite...
the pond temperature is still rising... up from 12.8C to 13.2C today with no heater...

    Hi Dave,
only cellotex on one full side of pond, i will be cellotexing the other two sides soon but can only go 25/30mm else it will be proud of the coping stones.... other than that just block and render, my pond would be rising too if i was colder than ambient but its 6c above ambient hence the slow loss....pump has not been on since 1pm yesterday so loss actually slowed down further as it approached 17c

actually having the insulation on the outside is a better arrangement for temperature stability...
as it makes all that concrete blockwork into a thermal mass storing heat.

but understand not wanting it sticking out past the coping stones.

me i'd use 2"- 4" celotex all round, and then take it off in the spring...
it's not like our ponds wrapped in polycarb with celotex over the windows, look attactive at this time of year....

Storing the panels would be an issue for me, the side of the shed cannot take anything else, the poly covers go there, the solar panel is dumped up there and anything else pond related gets dumped up there to keep out of sight of the wife as to not spoil the garden with pond related items may be i should get some wider coping tiles i will probably cellotex and render, the one thing i overlooked is the new pipe work on that return is a bit tight to the pond so unsure what to do there at the moment...
