heat pump advice
Good morning all,
ambient temps are again zero plus a distinct wind chill, not had a heat pump before so just checking with you guys i am running it as you should, the pond was around 13.8c when the pump was installed last Tuesday, i have set the pump to 15c and since installation it looks like it allows the temp to drop to 13.9c / 14c and then it comes on until display says 15c on the pump then it turns itself off, i have the heat pump on its lowest running setting called silent which i believe means it runs slower compared the other two running speeds and so warms up slightly slower but uses less electric to do so.... pump comes on every 12 hours or so losing a degree every 12 hours due to cold ambient temps.... not costing too much pleasingly but a little concerned temps are going up and down by a degree every 12 hours or so..... is this ok for the fish? temps have been very cold past few days and nights and with wind chill must be below zero at times....
I have turned air pumps down a bit this morning and turned off trickle, shower running at 6600l all insulated as is pipework.... fish active and feeding well twice daily still....thanks Steve.

Steve,
Mine is variable by 2 degrees, never had an issue. Personally i would have the setting on powerful in these weather conditions. Mine went into error mode yesterday when the cold hit, and that's the only thing i can think of (I had it on smart setting) less electric but less power in sub zero temps. I generally only run mine in the daytime in the warmest temps, and as you say it then cools overnight. However in these sub zero temps Ive got it set to remain at constant coming on overnight, however uneconomical. But under normal circumstances, dont see the point in running overnight when it will struggle most and cost most. We look like going down to -4 tonight.Fibreglassed/5000 gals/4.5 m Tunnel/Spindrifter/Twin drums/Bio chambers/Beads/Showers/Remora ASHP

Fluctuations of 1C (or even 2C) won’t make any difference to your fish. They’ve evolved to swim around bodies of water that vary by more than that from deep to shallow parts. You certainly wouldn’t be able to detect the difference with your hand either.
