Big Blue Declorinator
Hi,
Currently I have an Vyair 3 stage Declorinator, however thinking I may get a big blue.
Question to those that have them, how long do they last before needing to change the carbon? I have 12000 ltrs and trickle in/out at a rate of 2400 ltrs a week.
Trying to work out if it's worth changing.
Thanks.

I believe its 60,000 litres Cavester per change. If you do pursue this route, I can get the same bone char as the shops for cheaper. It's 195 at queni for a 25kg sack and I can get it for £100 plus postage. Also, not sure if you are going to the South east koi show in a fortnight, but I got a big blue tank for £40 from vyair at the show which was about £20 cheaper than normal, although I did need the sediment pre filter and fitments which was another £30 odd so all in all once I get the bone char it would have cost me £170 for 2 fills of the big blue (I believe the big blue holds 12.5kg) so 120,000 litres of purification instead of the £250-300 odd that it is for a big blue and media usually.

i hope my 36" big blue with catalytic carbon does a lot more than just 60,000 litres
i was getting a lot more than that with my old 10" standard 3pod with a spectrum chloramine cartridges....
used them for a year, for about 250,000 litres and never got a chlorine reading...
but they only work at about 2lpm max...
if the big blues do only make about 100,000 litres, i'll be setting my old 3 pod back up, as the trickle in/out.
and keep the big blue for faster fill ups when needed....

The largest one should hold around 18kg of AC and be good for around 60,000 UK gallons.
Cheers

My mistake, I knew it was 60,000 something!

So if I'm turning over 500 gallon a week then I can expect to get about 109 weeks out of (assume that's the large one) 18kg of carbon?

depends on how 'big' your 'big blue' is
they make 20", 24", and 36", in 8" diameter, and 36" x 10" diameter.
my 'big blue' is 36" x 8" and holds 12.5kg of carbon so half a 25kg sack...
and the gallon/litre ratings depend on your local waters chlorine level,
most 3 pod cartridges like spectrum and pentek are based on 2ppm/ltr of chlorine in your tap water,
where as most mains water supplies are substantially less than this, mine is 0.2ppm - 0.3ppm
so will last between 6 times and 10 times as long based on a 2ppm/ltr rating.
as big blues are not proprietory filters made and tested by a manufacturer,
there isn't much literature online about capacities of big blues.
as there are too many variables carbon quality, how well it was filled ect....
mine is on a meter to show volume treated, and i'll just keep testing until i get a reading on a dpd4 tablet.
for drinking water you should replace carbon every 6 months as it builds bacteria up,
and as someone on here found before, was giving a nitrite reading when it got too old/ full of bacteria....Last edited by davethefish1; 12-09-2021 at 10:07 PM.

i'm going to see how the 36" x 8" lasts...
if it doesn't do at least 6 months, i'll put a 20" fibredyne in front of it,
that won't restrict flow through, but will remove a large chunk of the chlorine.
it's rated at 75,700 litres at 2.0ppm chlorine so 750,000 litres at 0.2ppm.
and 7.6 lpm which is about what i put through my big blue at maximum.
but you will get some breakthrough as it gets used. so the big blue would mop up anything left over...Last edited by davethefish1; 13-09-2021 at 08:23 PM.
