Beads v K1 in an Aquadyne Filter - Which is Best?

Has anyone got experience of using K1 in a Aquadyne or other Bead filter? I've got a couple of Aquadynes and I've always used beads but I've just bought a small one for a quarantine tank and it has no beads so I need to decide what media to use
    Thanks
    Steve

I use micro k1 in my 24inch bead, probably not quite so good at mechanical filtration but much better for biological. In my experience it also cleans a lot better, there was always a ton of crap left inside when I checked every 6 months or so when I was using beads.

It wont polish your water like beads, but you will get more flow, you wont get bacterial build up,it will agitate a lot better during cleaning and you can use an eco pump.If you use beads in a bead filter, you need a pump with power.

Thanks guys , I’ll try some K1 and see how it goes. I’ve used K1 before in the small version of the Nexus and it didn’t clean very well but definitely doesn’t need a power pump to compress the beads

surely must be some level of fine particles getting past though compared to beads?

ive just picked up an aquadyne 2.2b , bottom 1" waste pipe is missing with bead coming out the elbow . wonder is something is broken inside.

might look at k1 micro conversion.

i would have expected the Micro K1 not to be as good but as far as i can see it is just as good. The other upside is you dont need a massive pump to compress the beads when you're using K1.

I think I may have seen the 2.2 you 've bought with the broken bottom wasted pipe. You need to fix that and have a ball valve at the end.

The beads will be coming out of the elbow purelty because there is no water in the 2.2 casuing them to float. Once you fix that pipe and put some water in it, the beads will float. If you've lost loads of beads (only way to check is take the central column out - dead easy, 2 bolts holding the neck clamp in place - take the beads out and you should have 2.2 cubic feet of beads) then I would suggest forget the beads and go with Micro K1. To match the original spec you'll need the equivalent of 2.2 cubic feet which is 62.3 litres. However, I would simply stick 2 x 25 litres in as they come in 25 litre bags. I dont thinkt eh volume is critical having lost loads from a 4.4 and it still works perfectly. The only think you would potentially lose is biologicla filtration but the K1 has a greater surfce then the beads so it balances out

it maybe, the same one , wasnt broken, just unscrewed and lost. i wasnt told this nor shown this until i noticed it missing and beads falling out the bottom.
i got some money off it.
i have actually couple of hours ago, removed central column , removed trapped beads from upper slots.
removed most of the bead, 2 supermarket reusable bags full guessing its around 2.2cu ft

this bead filter has been neglected , bottom waste port not being open , caused huge amount of crap caked to the bottom, i will have to jet wash it out i think .. still lots of beads stuck in this grey/brown muck with same consistency of clay.

other than that, seems ok,, pressure gauge has been removed and blanked at some point.

    blower works too..

i will have a think about k1 micro..,

i only got this as a stop gap until i make a new drum filter to replace the one i sold that i made.

and already had a 450litre bio chamber with 250 litres of mixed floating media k1/micro/hel x 13.
and 250 litres of CSM from my bakki shower that ive removed .
so biological not the issue for me..
