koi shape
perhaps a stupid question, but should all koi be pretty much the same shape from birds eye view?
was randomly looking on ebay for a pan net and stumbled across some koi for sale (i'm not interested), but seen some that look ridiculously "out of shape", the back third don't seem to match the huge hulking bodies.
is this through overfeeding, or is this just the fish's shape regardless (poor quality koi?) and can anything be done about it?
we have a couple of 10" matsubas (i think they are) that look like they have the potential to go that way.

Can I get a bit technical for a moment? For example, in our HINPYOKAI (KOI SHOW), the body shape is the most important criterion for the evaluation of the KOI, and the price of a KOI with a good body shape is higher than that of a KOI without a good body shape. So what is a good body shape? The common values of all breeders and advanced hobbyists are to prefer a body shape that will grow with experience, or a body shape that will last without losing its shape. These are the criteria that most of us use to decide whether our KOIs can withstand the enormous amount of food they are fed during the summer or whether they will lose their shape. We all look at skeletons and swimming postures (especially the way tail wagging).

Koi differ just like humans in their natural shape, and sex makes a big difference too. But they can get fat, and can carry more or less muscle depending on pond size and water currents giving them exercise. So pretty much like humans really
What you find is that some fish are more likely to get fat than others in the exact same pond with the exact same feeding regime due to genetics.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
