    Awful Koi Dealers!!!!

Now is this just me (I know its not) or are the vast majority of koi dealers absolutely awful? Aside from a very select few (Aurora, Oaks, Warwickshire, PFF) my experience has been very poor to say the least. Im talking about Koi here btw not dry goods, and not about necessarily visiting a dealer and buying a koi, id suggest any idiot in the koi business could achieve a satisfactory result there. My gripe list is long but here are a few examples, in gripe priority order . Bear in mind all the above easily pass the below tests (mostly). With the 4 above I was treated as a long time customer on the very first visit (basic customer service) and they actually seemed to want to sell me fish, unusual in the Koi world id suggest (see no 7)!

    1. Inability to respond to a text or e mail. Not everyone has time to sit on the phone or visit, this is the twenty first century, im probably at the other end of the country or in another country!
    2. General terrible customer service
    3. Rigid inflexible policies that cannot be changed like the Gistapo
    4. Using Facebook only. Not everyone spends their lives on "Facey"
    5. Crap websites (using social media only)
    6. Describing Koi as female, but not guaranteeing it (dont describe it as female if its probably male!)
    7. Being clicky! Actually this should be no 1, im a customer! All customers should be the same...Link to no 2!
    8. Total Inability to photograph and price koi on their websites (this could also be no1)
    9. Totally out of date websites in relation to Koi (Quality Nishikigoi step forward! Although I love the vids!)
    10. Cant photograph Tosai, why not!? i.e Cant be arsed too small, not enough value

I have to agree with some of those points.

Point 9 in particular really annoys me.

As a customer, I just want to see what is actually available. I don't want to scroll through endless pictures of fish that I can't buy. But koi dealers' websites tend to have large databases of fish that are already sold and they can remain listed for months. I find it so bizarre.

If it's sold, just remove it from the website - this can easily be automated with e-commerce software nowadays.

I once ordered a fish online, paid for it, waited months and nothing. So chased them up and they just said, oh we'd already sold that and hadn't updated the website. FFS!

    they can be ruthless mate,
i saw a koi i wanted online, thought about it for a few days...
then rang the shop to confirm it's still definately for sale, told it was, immediately paid for it online, to be called back an hour later to be told it sold seconds before i called...

Then there's the 'damaged in transit'! I forgot that one, only for the fish to appear in fine fettle a few weeks later at a much inflated price .

Agree 100% with Aurora Koi as Gaz is a great bloke to deal with as long as your phone's fully charged

I've not had any dealings with the other ones mentioned but have spoke to a couple of the very popular koi dealers and personally didn't think that much of them as most of the list of gripes applied.

Yep Gaz 100%, just try and keep your wallet closed . Some of the most popular and largest dealers are the worst offenders....

How about the inability to measure a koi accurately Awful Koi Dealers!!!! I hear it a lot where koi gets delivered upto 30% smaller than advertised.

I have not had dealing with many dealers mostly because when I enquire I hear nothing back!

I can only say of NFK, I have had no experience of others for buying fish. I have bought fish on the phone that I have seen on their website and after putting the phone down and going back online it is marked as sold soAwful Koi Dealers!!!! for that. I always collect ( only 40 minutes from me) so can't comment on delivering.
Ok sometimes I call and get a answer phone but always been called back usually within the hour.
In my view if I get bad service from any retailers I vote with my feet and go elsewhere.

Agree with almost every bullet point in your post Spongebob.

I've been mixed up with another customer and shouted at down the phone for constantly phoning when I've already been told the Koi is still in QT - No apology when he realised I wasn't that customer.

I've paid a deposit for a specific variety of Koi from a specific breeder, then the Dealer has come back from Japan and "forgot" my Koi despite having bought other koi from that breeder!

I've pre-arranged with the dealer to travel and view a koi, then told on arrival I can't view because its in the QT building.

The Facebook thing is spot on - A few Dealers in particular spend their lives on FB and I wasn't best pleased after a wasted journey to be told "Didn't you see my post on facebook that we'd be closing early today" No, I didn't, but your website clearly states you are open.

No replies to emails is common.

The whole "unsexed" thing is a scam. Plenty of videos out there of breeders sexing Tosai then selling off the suspected males which are then sold by Dealers as unsexed. Unsexed Nisai is even more of a scam. If it isn't a scam then why are 12 of the 14 unsexed koi I've bought all male? Someone please put my mind at rest and tell me you have a whole pond of unsexed fish that turned out female?

The size thing is funny - I've never bought a Koi from a Dealer that matched the stated size, always smaller, sometimes by a lot.

One thing I will say though, being a Koi dealer is probably very hard work and takes a lot of hours and whatever they earn out of it probably isn't enough.

You’re right on the male/female thing. I’m only buying females from now on (Sorry guaranteed females!) ‘Females’ are of course actually males . Not because I’ve anything against males, just that I have so many!

Am with big nige I haven't dealt with the big dealers when looking for the fry I emailed but 1 dealer and new forest and felt I didn't really fit 1 dealers criteria as no bother what questions I asked it was 1 word answers. Where as when I emailed new forest I felt they couldn't bent over far enough and the same again on the phone very helpful happy friendly people . . . I know a lot use the other dealer for fish and maybe I caught them on a couple bad days but that was enough for me to take my custom else where . Next main dealer I use will be new forest and gaz . He has some beautiful fish in and haven't heard a bad word against him . Some times the small business go that extra mile but seems gaz stand for what a koi dealer should will only sell you what you need not what they want and has time for people regardless of purchase size

I haven't had any really gripes with the dealers I have used so far, I didn't get a reply from a big dealer when buying a koi in regards to asking if the koi could be scraped before being posted but otherwise was reasonable. I certainly agree with the measurement thing though, I brought several koi from one dealer winning them on eBay, and every one was a cm at least or 2 less than stated on the advert. Whilst this isn't so bad when they are big fish, a 14cm tosai being 12cm is a huge difference. I can think of examples of pretty much the whole list though! The website thing is especially frustrating as a lot of dealers are well over an hour from me so a long trip to go and be disappointed if the stock doesn't match the website, so I don't even bother.

What I've found with a lot of these Facebook "koi dealers" is they advertise new stock arriving tomorrow, and by the day after there selling them, with no quarantine what so ever once they receive them. And after sales with a lot of these dealers is non existent. But there are the few that take pride in there sales.

Tbf the koi could well come from a wholesalers and already have gone through quarantine.
