How big a scale are the auctions? It seems these pose the biggest risk to spreading KHV.

It is only a calculated guess about it being auction koi, because he announced it was his most expensive QT tank, and the auction fish have been the most expensive that he bought this year. Some auction koi do get mixed for sure, but I don't want to "guess" names in case I'm totally wrong. As an example Narita Koi Farm auctions cater for Koi from at least 50 breeders all over Japan. It would be hard to imagine every single breeder's koi is kept in completely separate water systems once in Narita's hands. But again, just guessing really.

I would definitely be happy to buy from Gary as he is 100% honest even risking his business reputation by posting about the issue. Sadly Gatwick is a long way from Somerset
Mike Snaden has also been really honest in the past, and was actually doing PCR tests from all his live fish at one stage. I wonder what he will decide to do for his new setup in Japan once there is water in it. It looks to be getting very close now.

In all honesty I've not been keeping up with his antics and need to have a catch up, but my understanding was he wanted to do Azukari in his own concrete ponds, thus reducing risk of losses that would occur in mud ponds through heron attacks etc, but also being able to closely monitor koi and allocate food for maximum growth.

If he is still choosing that model I suppose you'd buy from the breeder and have it released into Mike's pond to "keep in Japan until XXX".

I think he has plans to buy from the auctions and ship to customers here too. Will be very interesting to see how he deals with the KHV issue. I’m wondering if he’s planning to just buy from Sakai and Momotaro to make it possible to keep them separate.

Gary Gatwick koi is very strict with his quarantine the first time I went to his shop he almost straight away told me about his First KHV out break First time I had met the guy. He was devastated by the effect it had not only on the business but all the koi he had lost more so customer koi I could see he was deeply gutted by what had happened. Gary and Sue put a lot of work into the business I feel very sorry it has happened again to them. He has now probably had another lesson that in the future he should probably not mix breeders. We are all human and I will definitely be buying from Gary again.

I saw this about Gatwick too, absolutely gutting, you could see how broken he was last time on the vid he did on YouTube with Mark Gardner. Garry is one of the few main dealers that properly quarantine and heat ramp, I know of a few big guys that just scrape and treat

I don't think a lot of them even bother to scrape, they just treat.

That's what frustrates me with Dealers who preach that people must never treat without a positive ID of the parasite, but add chemicals to their quarantine vats without having ID'd a parasite themselves. When I once questioned this I was told it would take days to scrape and scope koi in every vat and that they've been around koi long enough to know what it is likely to be carrying.

I agree that there probably is a level of experience where you can be pretty confident of what parasite is causing specific symptoms, but if they don't scrape before treatment they are certainly not scraping after treatment, and we all know from experience of failed treatments that doesn't work, and it goes some way to explain why the vast majority of us have parasite problems in our ponds.

Been checking the cefas website last couple of days, as I have a few at Gatwick which would have come on the shipment on the 1st of April, and it’s now confirmed as KHV, dated thursday.

Gary ain’t the best communicator, is useless at replying to emails , but he goes above and beyond to make sure what you are buying from him is ‘safe’.

Genuinely feel sorry for the guy, especially as this has happened before, and at the end of the day he’s protecting our fish and not just his pocket

I have never bought a koi from him that’s had a problem.
That's exactly what I was going to say. How often is it missed by those bringing in fish from the same breeders. Worse still, how often does it go unreported.

Well done Gary Gatwick. I think anybody seeing your KHV reports will be reassured that you are quarantining effectively.

I've never bought a fish from you due to distance but this makes me more likely to in the future.

I think they're the only ones that explain the procedure on their website as opposed to most who just put "Heat ramped".

I think any purchases made during the quarantine period and then lost, he counts as his loss.

Any purchased during quarantine, which remain there after the quarantine period, that die post quarantine are the purchasers loss. Dont quote me.

I purchased a couple of koi from Gary one of which I notified him had an ulcer or similar on its nose. He assured me it was most likely damage that had occurred in transit, but a few weeks later the fish died. To be fair he offered to replace it but each time I selected a fish Iíd be told ď ah thatís been soldĒ in the end I gave up. Prob a good job as the other died a few weeks later but not before my entire pond had become infected, resulting in me losing 7 or 8 other mature koi.
Not a great experience and underlines the importance of a quarantine pond/tank I guess, which I didnít have at the time.

That's not good Maybe Gatwick Koi should be made aware of this thread, so that he can interject if he feels the need to.

I'm presuming Stevo is referring to the historic outbreak that the thread was originally referring to, rather than a new outbreak in 2022.

It was def prior to this outbreak, not a good first impression obv as the blame was placed on the courier.

Iíd just started out back then so didnít know that was the protocol - whether it was HIV or some other infection I couldnít be sure. He assured me it was damage caused in transit which in my nativity I accepted, I also accepted his offer of a replacement when it died so again a bit naive

Never bought a fish from Gary but I most probably will his reputation is second to none to what I can see spoke with him over the phone on a couple of occasions and he never rushed or brushed me away always took his time I've had fish of a certain dealer who I reported nearly straight awayou to the dealer it wasn't right response no not my fish everything else in the pond was fine as it got worse told him again no not me definitely not my fish you can't prove it's mine that's sick the only person that actually took there time and tried to help me was tim Waddington and Paul at quality nishigoi and it wasn't even there fish sadly it died the dearest fish I'd bought a 300 quid goshki tossai with no help at all from dealer Gary replacement of a dead fish is commendable to me

    I'd agree with Whitey.

Gary at Gatwick koi seems a straight up guy.

Ive bought some fish off him and think it was the only time I've bought koi where they're not crawling in parasites.

I bought a Tosai Shiro Utsuri off him, I couldn't decide and he ended up giving one to me for free. The one I got for free had a patch of Beni that he wasn't sure if it'd fade or not. The irony is the Beni has disappeared and it's now a way better fish than the one I paid for lol.
