    Excessive noise and vibration issue

We've got a neighbour doing some building work using pneumatic drills, disc cutters etc etc and the vibration is excessive. They are about 20 to 30 meters from the pond and QT system so is this going to cause problems for the fish? The pond is semi raised but furthest away but the QT system is sitting on a concrete floor so probably getting the worst of the vibrations. The selfish twats were making excessive noise yesterday, on a bank holiday FFS and when I called 101 they told me that it was a council issue so they won't do anything for a noise related issue but did say they shouldn't be doing that sort of work unless it's an emergency outside of permitted hours which are 8 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday 8 am to 1 pm on a Saturday plus Sundays and Bank Holidays they aren't allowed to do that sort of work. Unfortunately there was contradictory information on the local council website so they weren't 100% sure of the actual times etc.

Your correct, no loud noise works are permitted on Sunday or bank holidays, the local environmental health at the council are the ones who deal with it.
The vibrations will depend on ground type to be honest but I have worked within 15m of my pond and my fish didn't seem bothered

Them times sound about right for the "considerate builders" program but diy am not sure to be fair mate. We had a mini x 4 doors down digging a garden out at 7.20 the other day!!!

As said above times are in relation to "Council controlled work" normally requiring planning permission.

DIY work is different. I did wait until 9:30 yesterday morning when I started my blower to clear the lawn before cutting it.

    Thanks Nige

I thought those times were right too and also confirming about the vibration not effecting the fish too much. Just thought they were very sensitive to vibrations so world war 3 going on a couple of houses away would have caused them more of a problem.

Yes I've read DIY maybe different but this is proper construction work for an extension they are doing. I think you still have to be careful with DIY work outside permitted hours if it's excessively noisy etc.

I think the planning permission rules have been eased due to lock down so now you just do the work then apply retrospectively according to someone else I spoke to that knows a bit more about it.

Still need to submit detail drawings for building control before work starts and planning outline needs to be submitted still just not planning detail drawings, at least in Dorset anyway

I did have a look a little while ago to see if anyone had applied for planning but maybe as it's only a smallish extension it may not need it but still has to comply with building regulations which is checked at various stages of the building process I think?

I'm hoping they might cut through a cable and then try to ask me to help them out. I would have great pleasure in telling them where to go in 3 words - **** right off

Yes, excavated footings, damp proof course masonry, wall plate height and roof timbers on plus insulation in floor then completion

And if they don't get it checked and just go ahead with the build what happens if someone informs the council?

Although saying that they would have problems later on when they come to sell and there's no paper trail for the extension?

If they don't have building control yes problems selling, if building control visit and they consider it a unsafe structure they can serve a notice to have it demolished. If the notice is not complied with they have the power to send contractors in to do the demolition and the homeowner gets the bill. Would have to be pretty bad for that to happen though

I was a bit worried about this when I was using a compactor on the patio sub base literally right beside my pond a couple of years back. The fish didn’t seem even remotely bothered by it though. They also didn’t care about a rotavator.

We also live only a mile from a large quarry who use explosives 3 times a week (they sound an alarm first so you know when it’s coming) and it makes the whole house shake sometimes. I’ve watched the fish during this and never seen any reaction. I go round and straighten the pictures on the walls afterwards.

They are odd creatures because if a person they don’t know leans over the water to look at them they leg it very rapidly
They can tell me from my partner. Im the one bringing the food

    Thanks for the reassurance

    Moving the pictures lol

It was pretty bad here yesterday and today and I was getting to the stage that I thought I might have to introduce them to cuddly old doctor foot in a particularly tender place. I'm sure as a vet and a mother you know what I mean

This wouldn't bother me. Until the time i can afford to live in a house miles from anyone else I would just accept it as life.

If you complained about that in my area you'd end up with a black eye! We endure everything from people burning old tyres in gardens to quad bikes revving up and wheelying up and down the road day and night, but the advantage is I can also do what I like when I like with no chance of anyone complaining.

Shouldn't have any adverse affects on the koi, but be cautious when this kind of work is carried out there might be chemicals and stuff flying around in the air.

Good point about flying stuff. The QT system should be OK as it's in an enclosed garage but the main pond is open to the elements although it's tucked in a corner beside a shed and a 6ft fence. The issue is more like the other week when they were using a dry disc cutter and clouds of dust were going everywhere

As the saying goes - revenge is a dish best served cold

    I can wait lol
