Using Salt to get rid of Willow Moss
Hi All,
My father has a real problem with Willow Moss in his pond.
The pond is 4,000 Gallons, with Profi Drum combi and additional moving bed.
All water parameters are fine.
The problem is Willow Moss is pretty much covering the entire walls of the whole pond, it is lush green and healthy, but it breaks of in clumps and is a pain in the a***
I've seen minimal posts with koi keepers that have had this issue, but no solutions to get rid of it.
One solution was to try salt, but no specific quantities.
Anyone got any ideas? If not and we were to try salt, what are the safe salt levels that are not harmful to the fish please?
Many Thanks
Mark

I have had the same problem for a few years now I tried salt at 3.9% over the winter which seemed to knock it back I fitted a new shower in February and within six weeks it has started to go black and die I'm not sure if it's a coincidence or not nothing else has changed other than nitrate readings have fallen salt is now out of the pond via trickle in / out

The absolute maximum salt level freshwater fish can tolerate is 0.9%, but it’s generally considered safe to use 0.6% max unless you have very accurate testing equipment and can be sure you are not over 0.9%. The reason for this is the]at the salinity of fish blood is 0.9%, so if you go any higher than that the fish will dehydrate and die.
If you wanted to use higher levels you would need to take all the fish out of the pond.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Thank you both for the replies & information.
From what i have been able to find out in my research on plants surviving with salt in a pond, it would seem that most plants cannot tolerate a salinity level of over 0.60%, like you have said Feline my understanding is that this is the highest amount that we can go safely.
So i was considering giving this a try in my dads pond, but any idea how long we can leave this level at 0.6% safely? I would imagine if this works, it may be a number of weeks before the moss starts to die off (hopefully)
Would we be ok to leave this in the pond for a number of weeks?
Many Thanks again
Mark

Hi,
Have you got any pictures?

Looks like what I’ve got in my pond and I I’ve always thought it was sphagnum moss!

Not sure what to do about it, Aqua Source doesn’t seem to do it.

That is the weed I have in my pond it certainly appears to be spagnum/ willow moss my wife pulls it out and lines the hanging baskets with it I have been trying to eradicate it for nearly forty years the addition of salt over winter and a new shower has knocked it back but I'd really like to see it gone
ps I've tried Aqua source and CBA kills blanket weed but not the moss

It continually breaks off & adds fines to my pond. Might salt the pond to try and get rid of it.
Can’t see another way of doing it

I have some growing in my pond.
I did an alteration and moved a wall so when doing so jet washed the walls for the new fibreglass.
I have a little growing now but doesn’t really spread I thin it out by hand, my nitrates and phosphates are both 0, guess this helps keep the moss in check.

I have this stuff in my pond and always wondered what it was. My pond is set in the ground and has sandstone rocks around the edge, moss grows on the rocks and the weed looks the same as the moss. I guess then that the willow moss can grow above and under the water. I pick it out by hand but at one place it has got right down the wall to the bottom. I would love to be rid of it. I use Aquasource for BW but it makes no difference to the willow moss.

Hi All,
Here is a picture of the Moss from my fathers pond, this was taken out of the Drum today.
We have organised a temporary holding pool and are going to empty/jet wash the whole pond this weekend.
