    Koi Ponds and Water Meters

Hi All. I Inherited a 1000ga pond with 5 Koi when I moved home and currently the house has no water meter, just charged on rateable value. My area is designated as somewhere all homes will eventually be forced onto water meters. Just wondering...for Koi pond owners with metered homes, does the cost increase a lot?

Don't think they can force you to water meter

I looked into this...unfortunately then can if they classify as a 'stressed' area, which Thames Water is. Aparently my borough is switching to 100% water meters.

Thames water gave us no choice last year. I'm sure it will cost me more but haven't as yet had the first bill, since being metered.

1 cubic metre (1000 LTRs) is around£3 for supply and waste so if you can get a rebate( maybe £1) per m2 with weekly 10% water change weekly around a pound a week on a 1000 gall pond. For me I find meter cheaper but there is only me and my wife

I must admit I was shocked when I found out how much some koi keepers spend on water bills . Can be as much as running a heated pond - especially if your running a Reverse Osmosis set up - which produces a lot of waste .

If we ever get put on a meter It`ll end up in a divorce !

Fortunately , I live in the NW , so were at a bit of an advantage on that front

Put a submeter before your hose then you can claim back for anything that goes out the hose

I have no idea what my water bill would be if I didn’t have a meter. But it’s currently £170 a month so fairly substantial. Yes, it’s a sizeable cost of running a big pond.

Im thinking of smashing my meter before they get a chance to come read it! It was £19 a month before the construction work started!
