Mussels From Fishmonger - Feline I Need Your Help

    I've done something stupid.

I have struggled to get mussels lately and found myself in Waitrose this morning. So I asked on the fish counter. The fishmonger went off and handed me a 1kg bag of fresh mussels. I asked if they were cooked. He said no, I would have to cook them. I said OK.

I walked back to the car and searched for "How to cook mussels". It said something about some being open or closed or something.

Then on the way home, it dawned on me that what I actually have is a kilogram of live mussels!

WHAT THE F**K? Why didn't they say so? It's like going to buy some sausages and they hand you a live pig.

I'm not boiling them alive. I'm just not. I won't even consider it.

So what am I going to do?

I know 90% of you will be laughing at me but can I keep them in a marine type aquarium or something? Until I go to the coast then let them go?

    What do they eat?

    Can they live in freshwater?

How are they even alive if they aren't in water? He got them out of a fridge and they're in a bag.

I can't believe the hassle I've caused myself just by not thinking things through.

That last sentence could very well be my epitaph.

    "He didn't think it through"

Well, I’m no mollusc expert. But yes, when you buy them from a fishmonger they are alive. It’s hard to tell what kind of consciousness they have- but they are similar to a slug or snail so I guess you need to decide whether you would cook a slug alive or not.

If you wanted to keep them then you would need a marine setup as these are salt water. They would need approx 3% salt.
I have no idea where you could release them if you wanted to set them free. They might not do well released in an unfamiliar location though, I’m really not sure.

They are filter feeders and eat plankton, so you’re not really going to be able to provide them with that in a tank.
Could you just give them to a friend or neighbour to do as they will with?

I think I will have to give them away.

I don't kill slugs or snails. I was cleaning a pipe with boiled water and I went to tip it on the floor and at the last second I noticed a slug there. So I diverted the water.... straight onto my pitcher plant....which hasn't recovered.

How about the freezer. Death by hypothermia rather than boiled alive.

Out of the two think I'd rather the latter if we were playing "would you rather".

I'm sure if you got pulled over by the police and you told them you were breaking lockdown rules to release some mussels you just bought from Waitrose into the wild, they'd believe you Mussels From Fishmonger - Feline I Need Your Help

IIRC RS2000 buys mussels to feed to his koi.

    Problem solved!

You will of course have to take them out of the shells.......

In the future you'll be able to buy bags of cooked mussels from Tesco for a couple of quid in the freezer section.

Just cook them, we cook cockles And mussels all the time in fact I love poole cockles. If the shell is open throw them away they are bad, just put the rest in boiling water when they open they are done.

Your right feline, you can't just throw mussel in the water and that's ok. They need to be in a tidal flow and muddy is best, they also need something to hold onto. In Poole as a boy we grew mussel on ropes at the top of the harbour, used to get 1d a pound from the local fishmonger for them, good days as a boy in Poole, I won't tell you all about the bounty the fisheries official paid for shags Mussels From Fishmonger - Feline I Need Your HelpMussels From Fishmonger - Feline I Need Your Help or how much we got for seagulls eggs

I envy your growing up in poole,
I stayed at rockly sands and branksome when i was a kid,
and fished for bass where the tide used to rip through a narrow estuary channel.

If you freeze them un cooked they really don't taste when cooked only good for the bin, cockles mussel even crab and lobster really should be cooked alive otherwise they have no real flavour and could even give you a bad stomach. We cook shellfish within a couple of hours of picking them, taste the best then

I don’t suppose the koi would be that fussy about the taste to be honest. Well my lot wouldn’t anyway!

It was a great place as a boy, spent most of my summers out in the harbour with mates, even poached the odd salmon or 5 at the entrance to Wareham river lol life then wasn't as serious as it is now

So buying mussels that have been cooked alive in a factory, then vacuum packed would be OK?

I gave them to a Polish bloke at work in the end. He keeps asking me if he can go fishing in my pond and I'm not entirely sure if he is joking, so he had them. I'm not sure he understood why I gave them him. Thanks for the cooking tips but they were supposed to be for the fish. I can't stand seafood.
