Cool Covers off & weather man warning

On a heated pond, when does one think about removing ones winter covers?

Its a sunny and balmy 11C out here today

But beware according to Gav @ gavsweathervids there is talk of another cold snap on the horizon.

Snow in first week of march I think.. Normally I would remove on a day then tuck them back up for the night but with problems with mine I have removed the covers to keep a closer eye on them

My cover would be a bit of a pain to remove in the day then refit for the night.
I do have a 1/3 hinged section that I use for feeding that I have now started leaving open in the day.

I actually never put my covers on this winter. I didn’t plan that, circumstances just overtook the situation. The pond never went below 12C, but the heat pump was working fairly hard in the cold weather.

But my pond is now running at 17C and I will hold it at that until mid March when I start turning it slowly up

    Hi Feline,

That's about the same temperatures I managed through the cold snap even with a cover fitted.
(Admittedly not the best fitting or insulating cover .16mm polycarb with a big gap round my bakki weir.)

The heat pump was working hard on the coldest days. I even had to fit a tray heater to stop the ice build up in the tray.

Did you have any big water temp fluctuations on the no frost/ice days?

No, not really. I think it helps that my pond is a fair depth and the walls themselves are insulated. My duratech has a drip tray heater fitted which definitely helps. It’s a bit milder in the SW than quite a lot of the country, so I get away with a bit more here I think.
