Any Members of the South East Koi Club on here?

Just wondered if there's any SE Koi Club members on here?

My experience of joining wasn't great. Sent emails to the addresses listed on website but got no response. Eventually set up a facebook account as that was the only other way to make contact and I did get a response from that. After completing application forms and paying membership fee I eventually got a membership confirmation email last August (It just said "Many Thanks").

That was it. Never heard anything back since. No emails, no membership pack (assuming there is one), nothing.

I put it down to the fact all the events were cancelled due to COVID meaning there hasn't been anything to communicate.

I tried to find out if there might be some medium to talk to other members, but there's nothing on the website at all, and the "Latest News" page is about a 2014 show and a meeting 5 years ago.

So I'm just wondering if this is normal or solely Covid related as I don't see the point of paying a membership if they just take your money every year?

On a side note I did contact a koi health specialist from the club who I paid (not cheap) to come round and diagnose a problem, but all he did was drop one of my Koi on the floor injuring it quite badly, drew blood from another one while scraping it, then said he couldn't diagnose the problem and would speak to Duncan for further advice.

I never heard from him again and he never responded to my messages chasing him, yet he constantly sends whatsapp messages trying to sell koi related stuff, usually over-priced junk.

Does anyone else have experience of this club?

That’s not a good experience mate.

I would be tempted to name and shame the “expert”

I'm a member of the SE Koi Club.
I had the same koi consult attend my pond 3 times
£160,£170 and £180 later I lost most of the koi he treated.
Was about to give up with koi then Davej came over
He spent nearly 4 hours with me and got my pond back on track again
When I asked how much did I owe him..... He turned around and left saying help out other koi keepers where you can.

    Ha!
He clearly knows a lot, but came across as a bit of a cowboy in my opinion.
I bought some CT off him too. Watched him weigh it but the amount I got didn't seem to correspond with what his scales said. When I weighed it on my scales the weight was well under what I'd paid for.

In the end I went to Paula about the problem, which is actually still ongoing, and she was a great help from the outset. We believe it is a water contamination issue of some kind, possibly linked to the cheap liner in the anoxic pond but that's another story.

As for the membership, do you actually get a membership pack or any paperwork whatsoever?

At present I don't see the point of being a member if there's no way to speak to other members, but I'm wondering if maybe the club has just wound down while going through covid.

If you're still struggling RS2OOO I can put you in touch with a knowledgeable guy. He'll get you on the right track and when we are allowed has people visit him in Croydon area.
I will warn you he does talk a lot.

I've heard of a pond he visited.....
Was pond side for 30 minutes and charged £180
He scraped a koi and treated for an infestation of air bubbles that were on the slide
Treated for air bubbles telling the customer they were something else and then would return in 6 weeks to check on them again.......

Thanks for the kind offer, however I am now able to inhibit the problem.

As part of process of elimination with Paula I tried adding her Pond Detox Formula once a week and the problem seemed go away but I thought that's just coincidence.
Then I forgot to add it one week and suddenly the problem came back!
So I continued adding it weekly, and have got to the stage now where I only add it once every 3-4 weeks and the symptoms stay suppressed.
It is still ongoing but we believe it could be caused by a cheap HDPE liner in the anoxic pond that is leaching, but too much work involved in changing it based just on that hunch so am hoping the liner eventually settles or gets completely neutralised by the detox formula and the problem goes away.

    I handed over £160.
He was with me around 50 minutes.
I warned him when he chose one to catch that it was Tosai and might be jumpy.

Sure enough It did jump, straight onto concrete between the pond and fence between 2 big plant pots so wasn't easy to retrieve. It had multiple injuries. He didn't apologise.
    .
Then the 2nd koi wiggled as he scraped it and the edge of the glass slide pierced through its skin and started bleeding. Neither of us said anything but I was thinking he must have noticed he just did that.

The jumper sat on the bottom with fungus and finrot for a week or 2 after. I sent him photos of it saying I wasn't sure it would recover, but he didn't respond.

Both koi recovered without any further issues.

I was hoping to pop over when we spoke about 3 years ago.

But it never materialised for whatever reason.

You are just up the road from my Mum's house so no excuses really, so will definitely make an effort. Thanks for the offer

This guy sounds like a total fraud! I would be asking for my money back as it just sounds like you handed over a load of beer tokens to someone for this koi club membership. I looked into joining a koi club when I was first starting up as the fella I got my filter from in Brighton recommended joining saying it was really helpful. Because I am in East Anglia I couldn't find anything about a koi club local to me or my area so just forgot about it. Definitely won't be joining the SE koi club anyway!

Same here. I like using the plastic tags from new plants.

But this guy is a "pro" so I suspected using glass slides was normal amongst the elite lol.
