How long can you leave a pump off?
Hi,
Sorry...maybe a basic question but I'm very new to keeping Koi! I have an approx 1400ga pond with 6 Koi in. The main part of my filter system consists of 4 'buckets' that feed into one another with various filters...brushes, sponges and some biological tube things. One of the buckets drain caps has developed a seep that I need to repair as it very slowly drains the pond and I have to keep topping up.
With the fish pretty inactive at 6C (the pond isn't heated) and not being fed, how long could I safely turn the pump off without affecting the pond? Is it safe to turn the pump off at all in winter or should it run continuously?
I'm basically trying to decide to feed the leak and keep topping up until I can sort the problem out at the weekend, or turn the pump off. Obviously won't turn it off if it is likely to be at the detriment of the fish!
Thanks.

Some people (I don't believe in it tho) switch all filtration off all winter. If its just til the week end I would say thst fine. Keep air in pond and moving media if you have it. The biggest problem I can see would be media die off which tbf happens in winter any way to a degree and standing water but keeping air going to help gas exchange. That's only mho others may disagree

I would keep the filters running and just top up until you’re ready to do your repairs.
Filter biofilm definitely does not die off altogether in winter. It takes it a while to get back up to full speed in spring, but I think anyone who has had a koi pond a while will know that there is a big difference between starting from scratch with a filter, and waiting for a filter to get going in spring having been running for some time.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

I have turned the pump off for just a few hours and ended up with ammonia spikes!
I would do what Feline said above.
