I'd like to upgrade my filtration system, the existing one works well enough but it's a pain to maintain and clean.

My plans are to stock my pond! I also have a Draco drop in to install, should I decide to on the nexus 220. Will see how it goes.
Need to get some colour back into the garden too!

Finishing the pond I started in sept 2019! Got it 3/4 built. Need to finalise return placement, lay another 3 or 4 course, buy a window, get it glassed, make slab and walls for filters, buy pumps. Finally, fill it with water and buy some fish!

amen to that ,"All I am hoping for is a kind winter so all the fish come out in the spring in fine health: Have been looking at Manky Sankey's web site about Anoxic filtration, have always been a great believer in veg filtration, hence my name .Thought I might start with 6 or so baskets and see what happens, only intend to use, when its a bit hotter, as that's when i put my fegy filter on.

I might finally get around to building the pergola I had originally planned over my pond.
The problem is I like the look of the pond being open really. But the fish could do with a bit of shade in the peak of the summer.
I also built the pond a size that requires timbers over 5m long to span it. That is going to make it much more difficult to find the wood- I’m pretty much limited to roofing joists for the long pieces. I would rather use oak, but these lengths in oak are unobtanium at the budget I had in mind
I haven’t entirely ruled out doing something more contemporary, but it’s too windy here for a shade sail.
I have a palm tree planted next to the pond that will eventually give some shade, but that’s a few years off really.2016 new 6000 gallon pond

I had considered it, but I’m not 100% sure I like the look of them. Plus, I actually want shade in summer but not in winter. A structure with slats I could change the angle of would be ideal. There’s nothing on the market like that with the span I need though. The solution will at some point come to me while I’m trying to get to sleep one night

For a pergola you could consider steel for a perimeter span. The section required could easily and aesthetically be clad in wood of your choice to look like a wooden beam with the bonus that it will never warp.
I remember looking at your build and somehow I don't think "rustic" warped main timbers would follow the theme. Whatever anyone says, unless you go for engineered laminated beams solid timber will warp in time in this environment.
You could then use smaller timbers resting on the steel cored perimeter spans or go contemporary - several options I can think of there.
For example. On the perimeter span fit a made to order concertina heavy duty tarpaulin (you can get all colours, finishes and weights if you ignore the cheap rubbish) with inset tubular aluminium supports which can be pullied back and forth.
Also, with such a perimeter structure a slat arrangement could be built, not easy, but again I can think of a few ways it could be done DIY to look and function appropriately at reasonable cost, not easy but doable.
Several more ideas occur.
With regard to a shade sail you would be able to find a solution which is "sharp" looking and bomb proof and moveable - but inevitably expensive.
Having spent a lot of effort making the pond look just so it would be all too easy to ruin the effect if the cover isn't of at least equal quality (design, materials and construction) which I am sure is the dilemma you are struggling with given a finite budget.
Any kind of cover structure will be large and tend to dominate the garden, so if you decide to go ahead it's got to be spot on - adding to your dilemma
It took me ages (and I mean months of musing and often during the wee small hours) to come up with a suitable and appealing design that was still affordable (£1500 including glass) to keep the wind off the swimming pool I built at our last house so I feel your "pain"
