Great question..
For me I need to make a decision if I continue to improve/ expand my current pond or build a new pond.
I think if I improve/expand my current pond I will be thinking of a rebuild again soon after.

Yeah I agree about the rebuild being more costly but if I keep trying to approve my current set up I feel I’m just delaying the inevitable and wasting money and effort.
How about you Samp? What’s your plans

If I was you and you can afford to do a full rebuild I would go down that route, especially if you are moving the location as you could move the fish over with little issue and even the water and as you say, delay the inevitable which will also make it more costly in the long run. Just make sure you have every part planned out and exactly what you want which I am sure you will have!
my plans: I need to finish building the filter pit or enclosing it anyway which I am going to try and do instead of spending the money on fish before I buy the materials! I am hoping to have this done over winter if possible. I am still torn between adding a sieve to my skimmer line and returning through a bakki shower to add more filtration or staying how I currently am. I would like to add an Adam Byer Kohaku with the Isa Showa I got at the Queni winter event but unfortunately with fishing tickets in March and the plans for the pond that I need to complete I am not sure if it will happen this year or at least not till maybe summer. The main thing is I hope to be able to feed the fish properly this year as after all the issues I suffered last year I feel like its starting afresh from spring so I am a bit dubious about adding too many but at the same time the temptation is always there! Currently watching the final Queni auction and eyeing up a couple

Some new tosai (Showa and shiro) plus new filter pit cover, pond sides and front (glass panes??) and possibly an Andy Finch RO recycle unit.

Lots going on for you then! I would probably say if you had a lot of issues last year take it slow and focus on the isa
I see Adam released his nisai this week was tempted by a few but actually decided against it and another Kohaku came up
I will likely go with the rebuild but take it slow and will keep the existing pond in place and running until replacement is ready.

The exchange between the hobbyists of Japan and the rest of the world will be realized little by little.
This will prove how limited and useless the information provided by the merchants for long time is.
The Japanese KOI breeders will be less likely to look down on you as outsiders if you are in a similar situation and share the same goals. The more people understand and that you have the skills to keeping and raising and growing properly, the more genuine TATEGOI will be available at a fair price.
I hope that the breeders outside of Japan who have recently emerged will have the ability to produce world grand champions in the future. If this happens, the old Japanese breeders and KOI officials will not be able to ignore it. We may have to hurry a little to make that happen in my lifetime.

The current pond is functional, but I never really planned it. The pond was an impulse build and I went at it with no research or understanding of keeping koi. It was built to a very tight budget and space limitation but I got the basics right.
Since having the pond I have fallen in love with the hobby. I have not had it easy though had issues since the get go but it kept me busy and learning.
I am now very informed, happy to expand to a different area to the garden and have the funds.

Recycle RO interest me. It supposedly will remove ammonia, nitrates along with all other impurities I do wonder if it’s the future of koi ponds.. as in will replace the need for bio filters altogether.
Drum and recycle RO should in theory be all that’s needed if it’s running constantly. I’m thinking we likely need more efficient lower micron drums before this will be feasible.

I am patiently waiting to be sent some pictures of a new recruit for my pond, i have requested a Gin Matsuba or a silver and black ghostie looking fish the bright metallic type........might even go for a Aka Matsuba, i do like a bold fully scaled koi, the dealer i have brought from has made it to Japan and should be out of isolation very soon, he is there for a long trip my budget is low key by comparison to his order book but it still gives me some excitement and something to look forward to in these challenging times we currently live in.... cheers Steve.
