Thread: Winter grow on / Fry progress

Thanks John. I have actually reduced the temp from 23 to 18 over the past week.
I would have no issues with maintaining any temperature in the grow on as I have a 3kw inline heater for the 300gal vat it’s overpowered for this specific reason and as I did not want large temp variances when I was preforming water changes. Since original set I I now have a trickle and overflow so that water change would not be an issue anymore.
There are a few reasons why I decided to drop the temp.
1 - cost
2 - allowing the koi to winter
My daily heating costs are around 80-90p
I will likely hold 18 for a few weeks the drop them right down just for a few weeks and then bring them back up to 23 nearing the end of feb.
I try to drop and increase the temp by .5 a day just to avoid unnecessary stress. But it can be done much faster if necessary

Mine is 350 gal similar to yours Mike and I have dropped to 19 deg mainly for cost and like you will drop a bit more soon.
Would like to tricle in out but that drops the temp so much the heater would be on a lot if not all the time, maybe I am not insulated enoughJohn

All still growing well,
Out of the 14 fry 70% are over 6” and a few are really slow growers. The 1 metallic that had a deformed mount when at 1” seems to have grown into it and it is not really noticeable anymore.
Got a great photo of the Showa yesterday.. more sumi development since 6th jan.

I was running out of top koi and aqua source high growth so I bit the bullet and brought 15kg of saki balance.
Considering how fast I was getting through the 1kg bags it’s not going to be wasted.
I mainly decided on the saki as it should allow more feeding and reduced waste.
The auto feeder is currently full with a mix of the 3.

Winter grow on / Fry progress
Went out last night to shut the lights off and do my evening check as I do everyday to find the temp had dropped to 17.3c from 18.5c
Heater has packed up! I did some initial checks, flow, reset, fuse.. all ok. Fortunately I managed to get a 1600w immersion type submersible coil heater from a neighbour and added that to my temp controller.
I was very fortunate my neighbour was able to help me out at 8pm Sunday evening I would have been screwed.
Note to self... get some back up heaters!

I’m not sure, i got it second hand it’s pretty old I think. It had an old pac test sticker with a 2003 date on it .
It’s going to be a pain to try and get it out as all the pluming is really packed in tight I may just leave it plumed in and get a drop in to see me through till I move this lot out.

That was a lucky break, getting it sorted on a Sunday night. Could have been such bad news for the fish.

Heaters turned up today, looked decent. When I plugged it in it was only pulling 200w! Annoying. Sending them back as 200w is useless for me.

I am hoping I can fix the 3kw when the time suits. I decided to get a couple of the Schego Titanium 600w drop In ones seem to have top reviews and was recommended by a friend.
Will always have them as back ups

Cheap Chinese items, May have been a bad batch.
The best price on the titanium ones I found was £60 give or take pennies. Brought mine from aquacadabra I think some items you cannot scrimp on from a safety and quality perspective.
