What did you do this year ?
Hi folks, I make no secret that my pond is 1.. cheap, 2.. a bit rough and ready, but it is an ever evolving thing that keeps me out of mischief.
So, this year I've removed the dodgy clay berm I had around it that was doing the job of levelling the ground, cast a concrete ring and gathered a load of old bricks to raise it a little bit further. That gained another 600 or so gallons bringing me up to around 2800 gallons, more water is always a good thing. I also built a simple bridge so I no longer have to balance on a scaffold plank to get from one side to the other.
This is where it stands now, still nothing fancy but better than it was and all done for cheap

Next jobs, well I need a tidy up as you can see lol, I'm in the process of taking down that big dodgy conifer that likes to drop needles in the pond whenever we have a wind. I'm then intending to build a small top pond of just a couple of hundred gallon to replace the waterfall.
Other hopes are for a variable speed pump when funds allow and eventually a couple of retro bottom drains... it will all happen eventually.
Soooo, what have you done with your ponds this year? what plans / hopes do you have, I know there are some stunning ponds on here especially compared to mine so if ya fancy showing off what you've been up to I for one would love to see.

I’ve done absolutely nothing to my pond this year
Your pond looks nice. My dad’s pond has a bridge over it very similar to yours, his fish hear his feet on the bridge and come clamouring to be fed when he gives 3 taps. It gives a nice view of the fish from above during feeding2016 new 6000 gallon pond

Your pond looks great , don't knock yourself down mate!
I've spent all year building my pond, with a few jobs to finish off in the spring, I then hope after that I sit down and relax and enjoy it

Yours is looking good.
I spent most of the spring and summer battling way too many parasites and burying big fish.

Cheers chaps...
parasites eh G mac...sorry to hear of your losses. I had whitespot followed by flukes in the spring, was lucky not to loose anything but I did nearly get wiped out by an ammonia spike that took me by surprise all of a sudden. I was on the second fluke dose and things went south rapidly.
I had cleaned filters and done water change before second dosing and all I can think is that I didn't account for dead snails actually in the pond. The couple of gold fish in there looked scorched by the time I got it sorted and things looked ropy with a couple of the Koi for a while but luckily everyone seemed to recover but I think it was a close thing. Lesson learnt for the future.
Feline, that bridge has made a world of difference compared to the scaffold plank lol..
and JT, sitting and relaxing has to be the best part of it, especially with a couple of cold ones

Cheers John, I do have a lilly but it struggled this year though it did well the previous year, have moved it a bit nearer the surface again now so fingers crossed.
I've always had rectangular ponds previously but there was a shallow goldfish pond here when we came and the wife liked the shape, so I was persuaded to keep the general shape, its longer / wider / deeper but roughly follows the old ponds contours.. its a compromise with the missus but I can't help but look at it and think how many more gallons I could have had if I had squared things off more lol.

Umm, what haven't I done with my pond this year seems to come to mind.... Planned it, dug it, built it, spent ages fixing it, filled it, emptied it, fixed it some more, plumbed it, filled it, emptied it, fixed it... I think I started digging in April and if I'm lucky, it will be heated and covered in time for Xmas (although that's looking doubtful already!).

looks nice mate. i changed my return pipe work from 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch and added a shower. also lost 2 fish to flukes followed by costia. nightmare to get rid of the costia.
also after i got rid of the costia pp the pond and deep cleaned with pp. left it circulating for 24 hours. it worked though. then dumped it and refilled. the fish have been great since.
so an up and down year. pond wise

"What did you do this year ?"
I managed to stay sane whilst much of the rest of the world went bat sht crazy.
That's enough for me.
I hope most of our members are not unquestioningly believing everything they see on the telly or in the newspapers.
There's so much more (good stuff) going on in the world than all the relentless doom & gloom the above are trying to make us all believe!
It's nice to see that this forum has generally stayed pure to it's subject and not strayed too far into all the insanity of current affairs.
I wish each and every one on the forum good health, both physically AND mentally, for the remainder of 2020, and into 2021, and beyond!Last edited by MustBeSomethingInTheWater; 29-11-2020 at 12:03 AM.
