Am I taking chances

Bought one of the above on Ebay cheap at just over £7 and was quite surprised as was better made than I thought.
Maybe Frim can comment,anyway used a 110mm end stop and drilled two holes to thread the heater through then clamped to a 4ins to 1.5ins reducer which I had and used a rubber connecter to join to my over flow which I am now not useing.
So basically the rubber boots are keeping water out instead of keeping water in.
Left it like this for nearly a week before checking to see if any water got through and it was very dry so switched it on and working great.
Useing it on my grow on only when doing water changes to get the water back up to temp.
As its 2 kw dont think it will go on my Elitec as that is rated at 10 amp.
Any comments good or bad

Looks ok John, if you wanted to be sure no water to electric contact you could us some electrical resin to fill cap with but probably not needed as no pressure on rubber boots

I'd be a bit worried if you are fixing a heating element to a plastic fitting John incase it gets hot and melts the plastic which could cause the element to fall out of it? Also if you fill the cover you put over the connection terminals of that heater with something that sets solid you will not be able to get to the terminals in the future should you need to check or retighten them?
I would have thought that your controller should handle a 2 kw heater as that's only about 8 amps depending on your supply voltage.

Thanks Frim hadnt thought of the plastic side of it but a good point mate.
It wont be used for long periods just to boost the temp up after a water change so not really thinking of useing it on the controller as I have 2 x 500 watt on it.John

Nice cheap solution there John. Personally I would look to try and seal the connections just for peace of mind.
I get what frim is saying about making the connections no longer serviceable but it was cheap enough to just buy another if needed.
I have not used this stuff but it looks less intimidating than the epoxy, not cheap but there is likely other cheaper alternatives
You would likely be able to cut this off if you needed to service

I'd hold off on sealing the terminals with anything until you've proved it works properly and the end cap etc isn't affected by the heat the element gives off.
Check the heat rating of that resin before buying it as it may not be designed to run hot even when set solid plus it may conduct the heat out to the rubber boot etc.

Appreciate all the advice,I have had it on for over an hour Frim and everything looks fine so think I will leave it alone for now.
The lead near the plug gets a bit warm only very slightly is that norm?
The lead is 1.5mm heat resistant about 2 mtrs long is that ok?John

Double check your connection and try it again if the problem goes away then it was the plug on the lead if not you could have a dodgy socket as 2 kw shouldn't get warm at the plug end I would like to think.

For elements you should be using a heat resistant flex like butyl (sometimes referred to as TQ I think) as the terminals get hot and knacker standard PVC cables.

Thanks Frim, it is heat resistant but will check the connections.
It only gets very slightly warm to the touch and takes a while say 15 mins,you have to squeeze the flex to feel it.John
