Child Safety Pond Cover
Hi
We are going through the process of fostering and one requirement is a pond cover. My pond cover needs to be 3m x 3m as its a square raised pond. Ive been quoted over £500 upto £1,000 by some people. I’m thinking DIY by using the steel mesh thats used for concrete strength but it would need to the painted in something that’s fish safe or a polyester powder coated single wire mesh fencing sections and suggestions please
Thanks
Mark

Hhi Mark,
Rebar looks pretty ugly even when painted so would be a shame to put this over your pond. These look nice but are expensive. Maybe you could try and recreate it.

I looked at those but because they dip and if child get knocks out for whatever reason and falls in the pond face down could be fatal

£500 isn't bad for a fabricated cover in stainless steel.
My 2" mesh stainless steel cover was made by wire mesh fabs for around that money.
Made from pieces that slot together over the pond.
I had it Powder coated locally as they wanted silly money for that.
It was a big outlay but at the time one firm quoted £12,000 and another £5200 so I worked out cost of materials to make it myself and suddenly £500 seemed very good value.
Has definitely saved a couple of my koi from jumping out, and from heron attacks, and also saved me having to make big heavy frames for winter Polycarb covers.

I see this cover on gumtree.. it’s not cheap but it looks decent quality
Seeing as they are asking that price used bust have been an expensive fabrication.

When i built my cover for my old pond I used this. As its stainless steel you don't need to worry about painting. I created a wooden frame with hinges.

What company was that?
Very similar construction to my panels, but 3000mm lengths will be very heavy so if you plan on removing them when your home in the summer etc it would be worth considering smaller panels. I am pretty sure they will bow significantly in the middle unless you have a support beam.
Based on experience of regularly lifting mine off the pond I would go for 6x panels of 1000mm x 1500mm, 3 each side that join in the middle of the pond and then a heavy duty box section across the pond for them to sit on. The box section would be the same thickness as your current wooden capping so you can cut a piece out and it would be flush with the capping, similar to what I've done if you cam make it out in these pics.

Also don't forget to allow some extra span for the covers to rest on the capping - I did 5cm extra all round.

The compnay was wire mesh fabs, your pond looks exactly what im look for, Ive found 1500x1500mm powder coated mesh panels so 4 of those and a box section would work i think

Ah right, explains why they're identical to mine since wire mesh fabs made mine.
Their work is great but you will be able to get Powder coating a lot cheaper than they charge if that's something you want done. They wanted £180 to Powder coat and I got it done locally for £20, just that you need a car/van big enough to carry the pieces.
My box section is aluminium, got it off eBay for £30 where you could choose all dimensions including thickness. A mate at work is a structural engineer so I told him the weight of the covers and he told me what gauge box section I needed.
